We ate here on a Wednesday in mid-December. The drive (from near Florissant) is beautiful, going both ways. Guffey sits in an ancient volcanic area, with great scenic surroundings. What's best about it is that there isn't much traffic and aren't many people and mcmansions, unlike most of the Colorado mountains. Guffey would best be described as "quaint" but not "quainte".The Freshwater is one of those unpretentious out-of-the-way places that has good food, beer, and coffee at a reasonable cost. I had a mushroom-Swiss burger and sweet-potato fries. It was the best burger I've had in years--cooked to perfection and just the right size. The fries were also just right--I wasn't stuffed when we went out to the car, but I was absolutely satisfied. The waitress was nice, too, and she wasn't run ragged by too many customers but also didn't bother us while we were sitting and talking with a friend for 2 hours. I recommend a drive to Guffey and a meal at the Freshwater if you're visiting the Florissant Fossil Beds or Cripple Creek--it's worth the drive and will give you a taste of the "old" Colorado, after the artificiality of Cripple Creek. For more central Colorado ambiance and scenery, continue to Hartsel on the "back road" from Guffey.

The Freshwater Tavern was an utterly delightful detour off of 9 that we'd willingly make time and time again. Not only is the service that we received superb but the food was truly beyond what we imagined being served at a roadside diner/bar. They had plenty of brews on tap but as we'd stopped in for lunch, we didn't partake in a pint. Just the same, we left with happy tummies, smiles and sunshine to tide us over until the next mealtime.

Kid-friendliness: Though the language of some patrons was a smidgen beyond what my family would deem suitable for little ears, all of the employees were incredibly well-spoken (easily understood) and kind to the kids. Like other times when the kiddos encounter things our family doesn't approve of mimicking, it made for a perfect learning/teaching experience.

Dietary restrictions: With absolutely delicious gluten-free pizza as an option, we'd be happy to stop by again!

Took a beautiful Sunday drive up to see a favorite local band at The Freshwater. We were completely thrilled with the dog friendly atmosphere, beauty of the surroundings, but the FOOD was FANTASTIC! Our waitress was fun & helpful. Food came out fast and hot. We are very much looking forward to going back!

They seem to be closed, permanently?? Signs have their hours, but no people, cars, during the times posted as open. Looks pretty abandoned as of June 2022.Update from owner, they are just down for only a few days. Can't wait to try their food, the owner was quick and helpful, even in down times- that says a lot!

The Freshwater is the best bar/restaurant in the area. From Divide it takes about 50 min to get there but well worth the time! The food and drinks are very reasonably priced and top quality. Jodi the owner greets us personally on arrival and checks with us periodically to make sure we have everything we want/need. How many places do you know that you can say that about?? There is live music on weekends and during good weather her patio is setup for seating and live music. Some of the acts are amazing especially considering the remoteness of the venue. We’ve never gotten bad service even during summer hours when the place is rocking. I just can’t say enough good about the Freshwater.
