Would really help if the employees could take a moment from their personal conversations with their coworkers to check a customer out. :(

Had a case of water at checkout, it would not register. Cashier made us go back and find the price, while multiple employees were standing around the register doing nothing. Showed zero initiative, professionalism, or problem solving ability. Overall just a complete lack of effort. The item did not exist, at one point an employee just said a price and with zero confirmation that's what the cashier entered to ring up. So any number on earth could have been said and I would have been charged that. If there is a grocery store in a 100 mile radius, go there instead of here.

We stopped in while driving through to get groceries. The General Manager was as unprofessional as I have ever experienced in a grocery store. He obviously does not have the professionalism or integrity to be in a leadership role. He was making jokes to colleagues targeting my three sons and I. It seems he thought he was being witty, but it was evident that it was sarcasm intended to make fun of us. It was not so witty to not be picked easily by my sons and I. It led to my sons feeling unsafe and sad. This really crossed the line. Two of my sons immediately picked on it and felt uncomfortable. For an adult to target kids--most not even teenagers yet--is pretty low character. Normally I like to assume that bad experiences in a place of business is likely due to having a bad day--we all have those. This cannot be easily chalked up to a bad day. This is bad character. Even on a bad day, decent human beings know better than to make fun of a child. Dawn--you obviously did not read the message. I wonder if this is a cut and paste response. This does not appear to be taking the concern seriously. We did not experience long lines or lack of selection and had zero concern about this. We experienced a lack of professionalism--and really a lack of basic decency--from a general manager. I already filed a compliant. Making fun of children is not okay. This really could be considered a type of bullying of a child by an adult. This reflects poorly on your store. It reflects poorly on Safeway as a company that someone with this lack of character and integrity would be promoted to manager. It also reflects poorly on the community of Gunnison. Because of this unprofessional behavior, my sons did not even want to be in this town. The type of unprofessional behavior exhibited by this general manager not only loses business for Safeway, but for the entire community. Anyone living in Gunnison or working for Safeway should be concerned that this GM could be losing income for the store and community. Again, making fun of a child is not the result of having a bad day or a lapse in judgment. This is a lack of character in a leadership position. The coworker he was making the joke to was much younger--looked like a teenager himself. This is setting a bad example and encouraging a younger employee under his supervision to engage in disrespectful behavior.I am updating this two weeks after the original post and original response from Dawn M. I have submitted a complaint online, contacted their chat, and wrote a letter--no response from anyone at Safeway. I did request a response. This, along with Dawn M. providing a generic (likely cut and paste response) seems to suggest that Safeway is not really concerned that a manger though it okay to make fun of a child and make fun of customers related to COVID. Dawn M.'s response seems to be about impression management instead of commitment to addressing legitimate issues. I will not be shopping at Safeway stores. Less than 3% of my reviews are 1 star reviews--it takes a lot for me to give this poor of a review. In over 50 years, I have written complaints to stores less than 10 times and never followed up asking for a response. But I've never experienced a store where a manager made fun of a child before or where a big chain would not care about something like this.

We love Safeway and prefer it for many reasons! When given the choice, we always go to Safeway for our shopping needs because of price and environment. And the best part? They're dedicated to continuous improvement.
