Thank you, Susan K. for the detailed, well researched review that finally got me to El Cisne! This bakery / cafe is so charming and, especially when you catch one of the many, many varieties of filled / topped bread rolls emerging fresh from the oven, quite delicious. Most of the breads in the case are made with something similar to brioche -- slightly sweet with a brioche-like rise -- and filled with an astonishing variety of fillings: Bavarian cream; ham and cheese; pineapple, ham and cheese; chocolate; and strawberry jam..... and that covers only about a quarter of the varieties on offer, probably! There was also a fabulous cheese-topped flat bread, soft, probably not leavened (possibly llapingachos?); semicircular, bready "empanada" rolls with various fillings -- baked, not fried; and a denser pan de yuca with cheese in the center. The cheese used in all of these breads was white, salty, and crumbled into small grains -- queso fresco or queso Ecuatoriano perhaps? If I am perfectly honest, I wasn't head-over-heels in love with the room temperature brioche-like rolls from the case, even after re-toasting at home. They're enjoyable, similar to what you might find sold as brioche or challah in the bakery section of a grocery chain -- but probably not baked day-of. On the other hand, a fresh-out-of-the-oven-hot roll filled with pineapple (in the form of a lovely more-sour-than-sweet goop), cheese, and ham (SPAM-like in consistency) was quite fetching, the outside flakey and crisp like a good croissant, the innards scalding hot when we made the first attempt to eat it in the car on the way home. I am not sure whether it was made with the same kind of brioche-y bread as the others or not... could the textural differences between a fresh-out-of-the-oven product and a room temperature one could be so profound? Clearly, this one needs additional taste testing! The pan de yuca was the star of the show for me, with a wonderfully light, yet substantial texture, possibly incorporating fresh, mashed yuca and not just yuca / cassava flour. (I found a tiny bit of yucca fiber in my roll much to my excitement!) It is similar to pao de queijo, which is made with tapioca flour, the starchy derivative of cassava, but without the more mochi-like chew that I associate with pao de queijo. I love that everything is so clearly house made al El Cisne, and when fresh products roll out of the kitchen. I'm not much of a sweets person, but those glossy cakes in the display look like they're worth a try. Not sure if we'll be able to wait until the next birthday for those.... :) Great tip, Susan K.! I'm so glad to add this place to our repertoire.

Food = Meh; service = ok; Ambiance = there is none. Authentic Ecuadorian pastries right in New Milford.

Super friendly and helpful staff. Be sure to get there early so you have the best selection of goods. We had meringue cookies, a cream bun and a slice of tres leches cake everything was delicious. And the prices were astoundingly low - we will be back!!

Tuesday afternoon around 1:15pm there was hardly any pastries in the case. What the heck. You cannot run a bakery with very little product. The 2 small items we purchased were not good. If Tuesdays are not a day you stock your case then say it on your web site.

ORIGIN:El Cisne (pronounced El - Seez - Neh) is an Ecuadorian bakery named after a city in the Central American country. The bakery opened in fall 2022, and is the product of a family effort -- Jessica Rivera manages, her fiancé, Luis Alvarez, and her father, Meisias Rivera, bake, while her mother instructs how to make Ecuadorian treats.LOCATION:El Cisne is located in a New Milford strip mall.CONCEPT:Once inside, customers can get a taste of Ecuador. Complementing the bakery focus, El Cisne also offers a small grocery with Ecuadorian pantry staples that are hard to find elsewhere, such as dried purple corn on the cob, purple corn flour, and cinnamon sticks. Small bags of salty snacks, such as salted, crunchy broad beans and corn.EXPERIENCE:I never tried Ecuadorian baked goods before, but El Cisne makes it easy to be adventurous, with a beautiful wooden display case from which customers may grab items with tongs. I selected three breads, and was surprised to find at the register that my selection only totaled $4.50. Two of the items were filled with Ecuadorian cheese -- a salty, crumbly cheese that is apparently included in a wide range of dish types.Upon my second visit I came equipped with suggestions from neighbors who are from Ecuador. Dishes not to be missed include the guava-filled rolls, hot chocolate, and Morocho. Morocho, composed of dried corn, milk, sugar, and seasoned with allspice and cinnamon, is a special hot pudding/drink that takes hours to make. In the fall, look out for Colada Morada, a fruity drink associated with Day of the Dead.Nonetheless, there are plenty of familiar options available as well, such as flan, custard-filled pastries, and cakes. El Cisne is a welcome addition, as residents in the vicinity had previously been limited to purchasing cakes baked at grocery stores.TIPS:To catch a sip of Morocho you must arrive in the morning! Pair sweet with savory, such as Morocho with sugar-topped cheese empanada.Looking for something less sweet? Select hot chocolate instead of Morocho.Baked goods are ever-rotating out of ovens, some restocked more frequently than others. I suggest you ask which rolls are the most fresh, as this appears to vary by day and time. The bakery is designed for take out, but there is one cafe table with two chairs available.

Ordered a strawberry filled tres Leche birthday cake. It was delicious. So moist and flavorful. They filled the order with only four days notice. Very reasonably priced. Will definitely go back.

How has this place been in business for 4-5 months and no Yelp reviews? It's shocking! El Cisne is an Ecuadorian bakery with a great variety of packaged and fresh goods. They have a large coolers for drinks, and a lot of imported packaged goods you're not going to find at just any other store. But the best part, the one you can smell from outside, are their freshly baked breads. They have sweet and savory, and you're able to pick your own using a collection of red tongs and trays. I tried several, including a dulce de leches, chocolate, cream cheese, and cheese with brown sugar. The bread itself would make Paul Hollywood proud - it was well risen and fresh. The fillings were also very good, but some (dulce de leches, chocolate, cream cheese) ran through the bread while others (the cheese, cheese with brown sugar) were only in the middle at the top. There is also a shelf filled with cookies, including one epic one covered in chocolate chips. El Cisne is definitely a must stop!
