Grassroots used to be one of the best ice cream shops in the area. Unfortunately it has really gone downhill recently. My honey lavender ice cream today had some freezer burn in it. It used to be my favorite ice cream but twice now it has been freezer burnt.
The worst part about grassroots is that you can’t see into the ice cream case if you’re short. I understand they say this is because of “high quality ice cream that doesn’t have dyes and looks similar”. However, it is still nice to know if something has a chocolate base or not. As a visual person it’s annoying, as someone that brings kids its infuriating. There are many flavors and the kids can’t read. If they insist on doing this I’d encourage the staff to be more outgoing and excited to share the flavors.

I very much enjoyed the Ice cream here but I noticed in order for the person working to scoop the ice cream he has to lean fully into the freezer case. Maybe because the ice cream is down so low it was difficult for him to reach. His full head of hair was hanging over all the ice cream and nearly touching the cone he was holding to scoop my ice cream in to. It seemed a bit unsanitary to me.

You can never go wrong with Grassroots Ice Cream!
I will say I am more partial to the street food side of the restaurant, their ice cream is very good too. They always have a wide variety of flavors and you can get any flavor made into an ice cream sandwich which is pretty cool. I recommend checking out grassroots for dinner and dessert next time you are in the area! They have multiple locations as well (I am biased towards their Granby one as the food there is a bit more consistent!)

Food is decent, service is helpful, and the atmosphere is fine. The waitstaff are helpful, but not super knowledgeable on allergens. They have a handy cheatsheet for gluten free and vegan options, and are very helpful in talking to the chefs. As a note their Greek bowl needs to have feta & tsaziki removed to be vegan, not just the feta. The ice cream is good, they seem to have 2 vegan flavors at all times and their wafflecone is dairy free! Would come back.

I don’t understand the wall they built in front of the ice cream cases. Was it specifically to prevent children from seeing the ice cream? So the parents have to hold them up to show them, while reading the options on the board but not being able to tell them which is which? Inconvenient, unnecessary and honestly discriminatory toward children. Adults can see but not them? I guess it’s better than the Granby location where no one can see the ice cream. Seeing the ice cream helps my family and I, and I assume many others, choose the ice cream we want. I ordered rose chocolate. It is not chocolate. It is rose ice cream w chocolate chips. This is why the ice cream should be visible and labeled.

It was a weekend day in May and there was one person behind the counter (I'm assuming there was a stopping issue because that seems really really understaffed). I had ordered ahead and showed up 15 or 20 minutes later to pick up and they had not even started it. Huge line and it was just a total mess. I'll definitely just get ice cream somewhere else. I mean the ice cream was good but just not worth the weight and the stress.
