We went for my husbands birthday, figured it would be a nice restaurant and although the ambience was nice the service and food was just ok. We started with the octopus, scotch egg and homemade ricotta. Scotch egg was the absolute winner. The octopus was good but the fried rice that was served with it stole the show and the ricotta was just ok, nothing to rave about unfortunately. As for our mains we ordered the special brisket, lamb chops, chicken and dumplings and summer orecchiette plus their homemade sausage. The brisket was dry and cold, seemed like it was leftovers.... The lamb chops weren't cooked as desired and were served with a beet quinoa; the color made it off putting. The chicken was perfectly cooked but and again was just ok and the orecchiette was fine. Something was off with the sauce - couldn't pin point it if it was the corn or broth. Because this was a birthday dinner I was a bit dissatisfied with the food and the service, the server wasn't very attentive.

it is fortunate and unfortunate that The Charles isn't closer to where we live. Unfortunately, due to the food/service/ambiance is spectacular EVERY time we visit. Fortunately, for us, we would be there probably once per week.

Anniversary dinner was exceptional! The octopus appetizer was cooked to perfection. I love paella but due to allergies never order it. However our server, Nelly, made sure the kitchen prepared the dish especially for me, it was beyond delicious! Dessert was the bread pudding crème brûlée, a perfect ending to a perfect meal. I have a new favorite restaurant!

We thought to dine outdoors, but the hostess was kind enough to warm us about a bee problem. Indoor dining was a better option. Everything was great- as usual.

What an awesome place. 2nd time going...both during Porchfest. This time, we brought our two boys, and they liked it as much as we did! Absolutely in the rotation and it's 30 minutes from us.

This place was very accommodating when we requested to arrive 90 minutes early for our reservation. The food was delicious & i love when you are gonna split a course with someone and the restaurant plates it for you as 2 smaller portions. That's top notch service. Our waitress was very sweet & checked in is frequently. The owner was in the building they said and maybe that's why it ran so efficiently this day, but i believe they are a well oiled machine. This restaurant is about 2.5 hours from my home, but i will revisit.

Is my opinion that The Charles is one of the best restaurants in Connecticut. Their drinks are amazing ,must try the expresso. Martini. Ive had their octopus , it comes with rice it is amazing , some spice. Their Salmon dish is amazing and the yuca fries . To say the least their menu has all types of options. Delicious food and drinks.

This was our first visit to The Charles and it won't be our last! We loved the food and ambiance. We were celebrating our new home in Wethersfield (yes, we just moved here) and wanted to do something special. A few points to share: No one acknowledged we were there for a special occasion (this info was included in our reservation). Do not serve by reaching across a guest; walk around and serve. When resetting the tables, be quiet and don't “slam” down the dishes and silverware.

Fabulous food, great ambiance, awesome location. The place is a bit noisy, which makes conversation a challenge. The challenge of an old historic building.
Server will need to speak a little louder to patrons. She was lovely and attentive. Food was delicious and well presented. Can't wait to go back again. Parking is limited which can be a drawback.

First time, it was a great place to meet with friends or just a night out with your significant other. Food, service and ambiance all great! Prices reasonable for a mid to upscale restaurant. Great experience and would definitely go again.

Food was excellent! The ricotta appetizer was amazing!! Only downside of the whole experience was not acknowledging our anniversary until we were walking out the door and one of the staff members said, “Happy Anniversary “. A little disappointed in that, as previously we had been there for my birthday and it was acknowledged.

Went for dinner and sat outside. We got crab cakes and fried green tomatoes for appetizer, both were great. Paella dinner was excellent. Service was also excellent.

We love this place, have been many times. However we went this past weekend for our anniversary and it wasn't the best experience. For what is supposed to be one of the most romantic restaurants in the area, there were too many families with little kids. Some of the parents are completely clueless (or just don't care) about other people and let their kids yell and run around. I know the restaurant can't do much about these entitled, selfish parents of today, it's just a shame that this is what we experienced at such a great restaurant. I'm sure we'll go back because it is a great place overall but never again for a quiet dinner for 2.
