I really want to love this place but every time I come here I leave disappointed. I will definitely give them credit for great drinks, but the food is average at best. I’ve dined here many times and today I ordered the firecracker kale salad with grilled chicken - the meat was extremely under seasoned and dry and the greens had no flavor. I hope this place can turn around, it’s such a beautiful restaurant and a great location.

The Charles is a sanctuary of refined taste, where each dish feels meticulously curated. The roasted salmon, with its crisp skin and tender flesh, and the steak frites, a flawless union of juicy perfection and golden fries, are culinary triumphs. For dessert, the Martha Washington cake enchants with layers of nostalgia, while the apple cinnamon bread pudding delivers a warm, spiced finale to an utterly indulgent experience.

Food was excellent, great service, server was attentive and came back often. The table seating is alittle close, but beautiful old home and historic atmosphere.

I really liked the menu - we had a hard time making a decision. I went with the steak frites. I ordered it medium well and it arrived less than medium rare. After the salad course, I offered a glass of Italian red wine expecting it to come out with my entree, but it to too long and it arrived after I would have eaten my steak. So much for pairing. Either they were understaffed or over busy. The server was friendly, but rarely seen. Brought the steak home and cooked it to medium well perfection and it was delicious!

The food was absolutely the best! I had the "Sunday Gravy" and it was one of the best, if not THE best dish I ever had. My parter had the cod which also was very good. I was disappointed however by the atmosphere. There was a private party in the adjacent room upstairs that was very loud and distracting. I also thought we would be near a fireplace but i never saw one. Maybe this is a sign of the times, but I thought a restaurant charging this much would not have staff wearing jeans.
Parking: Firehouse lot was full but i did find a spot on the street. I can see where this would be a problem on a busier night.

Reservation system only allows 6. My sister tried to call and contact them a few times to adjust to 7 and no pick-up. She text the reservation system during the confirmation to adjust the number to 7 as well. I got there first and realized we were at a table for 6, no big deal right? Waitress came over and I let her know we have 7 and asked for another place setting. She immediately told me, no the reservation is for 6. I apologized, maybe someone wasn't coming and I was wrong but usually we have 7. She went back to the host area, came back and said "yeah we called the person who reserved and it's 6" and walked away. We ended up having 7 like I said. I told my sister what happened and she said they lied and never called and only got the reservation text. We could see the staff visibly annoyed and talking to each other, they all were looking at our table. Another waiter comes over with a chair (we never needed or asked for one because we had a curved booth that could fit us) but we were all sat, so we said we didn't need it, but we needed the place setting (utensils, water, etc). He huffed and puffed like he was angry with us and shuffled away. We again had to ask for the water and utensils. We felt like we were met with attitude and side eyes the entire time we were sat. It was very uncomfortable to be there. Why would you be upset that we have one more person when you aren't fully booked out (plenty of open tables), it's more money for your business. The only person who was friendly was the host (a guy) at the front. As for food, my sister had a grilled cheese that wasn't melted at all, her bf said his tacos were not good, my husband liked his burger, the tomato soup was good. Won't go back after this experience.

The Charles is a nice restaurant in Wethersfield. They have a nice she election of food, a great drink menu, good service and a nice atmosphere. The only negative is the parking. Of the 4 times I’ve been to the restaurant parking gas been a major hassle everytime. I would not take anyone there if they could not comfortably walk at least 3 blocks.
Vegetarian options: The goat cheese and beet salad is delicious. They also offer other vegetarian options, such as wedge and Caesar salads. They offer shrimp, salmon, steak, and chicken as protein options.

Very unimpressed with this place after hearing so many good things. I made a reservation for my birthday lunch with family, when I tried to call and let them know I had one more person joining, no one answered and their voicemail was full. We let them know once we arrived and the manager rolled her eyes and gave us a hard time about it. Ok fine whatever I can let that go, but then the food was so bad and disappointing on top of it. I ordered a grilled cheese and the bread wasn’t grilled and the cheese wasn’t melted at all ?? We also had the Korean tacos and the tortillas were chewy and hard and overall just not good. Go to Lucky Lou’s across the street instead, much better service & food!

Even though the parking leaves A LOT to be desired, the food and service MORE than made up for it. The deviled eggs, Scotch egg and homemade sausage are all must tries. The steak frites, fra diavalo and salmon were also amazing. And our server Steven took the whole evening to the next level. A definite must try

Restaurant in a house. Good decorations. Good food. Was quite busy with normal speed of service. It was bit loud for me, but that could be fixed. Overall good for an expensive night with good food every one and while.

Unfortunately, though we had a reservation to celebrate a birthday, we waited over 30 minutes to be seated for dinner. Once seated the food was great and staff very friendly. It was a bit loud but it was a Saturday.

Honestly, I just sat and attended the bar, hoping to buy gift cards. However, they haven't given out bonuses yet when you buy them, such as buy 100, getting 10 dollars free or something to that effect. This cocktail was called the Beast of Bourbon! I lived it!
