My daughter and I found this place after leaving Highwire deer and animal farm. So glad we did! Loved everything about this place. Down home cooking, kind staff and so much to look at! We'll be going back again, definitely worth the hour drive from where we live!

On 6/28/24 I had lost power the previous night at 10 pm. I wanted a hot breakfast and hot tea. I headed for the Charcoal Chef !!! They could not process credit cards because no internet! Cash or an I O U!!!! What restaurant hands out I O U’s!!!! Thankfully, I had cash. Two of my neighbors came in and one of them have cash and one didn’t. I offered to pay for their coffee, but they refused. The server was extremely busy and attentive to my request. A piece of cornbread and hot tea and cold water. Then three huge pancakes and syrup. The tea is served in a small teapot. The only caution I would say is please bring a sweater or a shawl, as it is very chilly. Otherwise, it is an incredible mainstay for New England.! Particularly Woodbury, CT. They are usually closed on Tuesdays and will be closed next week . Actually it’s already July 1,2024 , so it’s this week!!!

We were there for my brothers 60th birthday. We were a party of 12. Everything went very smoothly, the food was all very good, and our waitress took good care of us. She even brought out a piece of cake for his birthday. I personally don’t live in the area, but when I go visit my brother again I will suggest we go back.

This gem is so nice and cozy, the atmosphere is very antique and rustic. Love my waitress Donna very attentive and sweet. Watching Casey making drinks made me want one or two lol. We'll definitely be back again and again.. and the YAM BAM.. thank you ma'am yumm-O ❤️

Always excellent food, in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. It's not pretentious and doesn't try to be anything it isn't. Big menu with lots of choices, and you really can't go wrong with any of it. Love the burgers, and the chicken basket is also a winner. Great breakfast too. This time we got the bread pudding, which is made in-house and was some of the best I've had. Prices are reasonable, though keep in mind sides are extra. Service is great, and the people are very friendly.

My grandparents started going to the “chef” in the 50s and my family have been loyal customers ever since!In the past couple years there have been huge improvements, the food is consistently much better, they’ve have made some good menu upgrades and now have exciting specials!Best part has to be the strong cocktails!
