Staff did not know if they had menu items and the owners children were running around the shop behind the counter and cooking areas being very inappropriate and vulgar to the staff at a very loud volume to where we felt uncomfortable with our children present.

As a long time Surfs Up fan and supporter this year has been more disappointing than last year. I appreciate the effort to paint the shop but not enough of an update. The service and the quality has gone down exponentially the last few years. $18+ for a small cheesesteak or any type sub plus 4% credit card fee. I used to go every week to get a cheesesteak but this year I went 3 times and was disappointed each time. The cheesesteaks are just smaller and the prices are out of whack with reality. I also saw them reheating the steak for my sub instead of cooking it fresh. Seems like a very low quality standard and a lot of effort to cheapen everything from the subs and pizza to the drink cups. Please please fix this cherished spot in Bethany before you go bankrupt. I want it to be soooo much better like it once was.

We used to be locals and loved Surf's Up. Came back to Bethany for a visit and was looking forward to a great cheese steak. What a disappointment! Not at all the same. Dry meat, hardly any cheese and gross tomatoes. But the worst part of the visit was the staff. Swearing, tossing food at each other while prepping and very loudly teasing each other. If it was my business they would all be fired!

We ordered two slices—one plain and one with sweet peppers. The sweet peppers were just lying on top and kept falling off as I ate. 😒 The slices were huge, but taste-wise, nothing to write home about. 🤷🏾♀️ Added bonus: I watched one of the pizza makers take out his phone with his gloves on, do something on it, and then proceed to make a new pizza without changing his gloves.

Surf’s Up is a true beach-town staple. Bright walls, goofy art, old-school vibes. Nothing polished or pretentious, just a place that knows exactly what it is. You walk in and instantly feel like you’re in the right spot for a hot sandwich and a break from the sun.
I ordered the large Italian sub. It was loaded with meat, cheese, shredded lettuce, and just the right hit of oil and vinegar. The roll was soft and fresh, holding everything together without falling apart. It hit all the right notes. One of my friends had the small turkey, and even that came out with serious weight to it. They don’t skimp.
Prices are on the higher side, but it makes sense. You’re at the beach, the food is fresh, and the portions are solid. Staff was friendly and fast. Everyone working there looked like they’d been doing this forever and still enjoyed it.
If you’re in Bethany and want a sub that delivers on flavor without any nonsense, this place is worth the stop. It’s the kind of local joint you remember when the trip is over.
