This is a continuation of my review of recent BBQ in Sussex County, Delaware, it sure was a great day, we started with lunch up in Bridgeville with the great Kiwanis Chicken BBQ. This is only a daytime weekend thing during the summer and while it’s not the only chicken stand in Sussex, I’ll tell you the sauce the blast the chicken in, provide on the side & sell by the bottle is better than crack!
Our A/C was broken, it was high 80’s so we didn’t wanna cook and needed a dinner to pick up. Fat Daddy’s BBQ was not too far out of the way so we called in our order and in 20 minutes were looking at two girls talking photos of the outside of the building. We might have parked in the frame; sorry…
Nobody was in front of us and the food was sitting on the counter with maybe three other bags. Two employees checked us out in seconds and got her a cup of ice water to go. Once in the car the ride was overwhelming full of a smoky aroma that made it hard to resist the temptation to pull over in Redden State Forest and have a picnic even on top of our chicken lunch.
A few hours later I pulled the food from the fridge sliced the ribs and (god forgive me) microwaved the food a short time to just reheat it.
We’d gotten a Rib Dinner that included a full rack, six wings and two sides. The wings come in a few different styles and I’d read about folks raving for the smoked and this was a solid choice. Their size was not huge but I’ve seen smaller too; the bark was outstanding as was the flavor.
She pronounced that the potato salad was “pretty good”. The coleslaw was only adequate.
Now the biggest thing, the ribs were very close to perfection. They had a fantastic smoky flavor, a wonderful dry rub crusty bark and the meat was not overcooked; as one took a bit, the meat was tender and yet the rest of the rib meat didn’t drop off in mushy chunks with a clean bone. This could score big points in a BBQ competition!
Lastly, the wife is into cornbread and such would get hush puppies at most other BBQ joints and she was bummed it wasn’t on the menu here…well we did get an order of the cornpone of course…it comes in a little foil wrap, we split the single order and it was the last thing I tasted. Well freaking mind blowing is all I could say at first! This might have had some kind of kisses from the smoke gods for I’ve never had a bread with such a subtle yet at the same time powerful smoky flavor was intriguing. I’m so kicking myself for not getting a much larger order!
The month before, we’d been to one of the other rib places in the area. The contrast between them is amazing.
Smokin D’z BBQ has a trendy new location with colorful outdoor picnic tables, outhouses; if it is raining yeah got little beach umbrellas, sit in the car or go home. Fat Daddy’s looks like it hasn’t changed since the 60’s but at least has a dining room & flush toilets.
SmokinD’z is open Saturday & Sunday, Fat Daddy’s is open Thursday-Sunday.
Smokin D’z & Fat Daddy’s menus speak for themselves are easy to compare and are online...
Food is subjective and a matter of taste, nothing I say will change your mind if you’ve eaten at one place and consider it the best place around, great! If you are curious and want to try something new, different, whatever, my work is done here.

Stopped here for a quick bite on our way out of Bethany Beach.....everything was amazing! The burger melted in my mouth and seasoned to perfection! I was curious to try all the sides, but ended up trying the fries and potato salad which were both amazing as well!! Highly recommend!!!!

This was my first visit here. It was a very cute little side road small town barbecue grill pit stop. I placed quite a large order and I was not disappointed. The brisket was good. The pulled pork sandwich was good. The potato salad was wonderful baked beans wonderful. The gentleman that took my order he was very kind and helpful. I highly recommend if you have never been to fat daddy’s barbecue. You need to come & get you some. 😉

Best BBQ on the Eastern Shore and I'm super picky. We come back year after year and I'm always pleased with the quality, taste, and service. Fat Daddy's is worth the trip. Favorites include the pulled pork, smoked wings, baked beans, and stewed tomatoes. Mama Frey is the best and knows about quality.

Disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high, or just coming back from Nashville and New Orleans, where great food was everywhere. The ribs were burnt, and the pit beef and pulled pork were dry and tasteless. We ordered 6 different sides, and all were subpar. Based on all the reviews and ratings, I can only feel that we hit a bad time, but we could only eat 1/4 of check the ordered food.

The BBQ it self was excellent. I picked up at about 1300 today. But I got a surprise in my Mac and cheese. A couple stings of metal from a metal cleaning pad were in my Mac and cheese. I would have called to tell them but they are closed.

I spent over $100 on their best beef brisket dinner and it was the worst I’ve ever had in my life. I bought two orders one for myself and one for my father. Both of us had to throw the brisket away. It was 3/4 fat and a little bit of meat. This place has really went downhill. This is the third time in a row. This is happened. I will not be going back for number four.

We stop here at least once a year and it has been consistently good. The flavors are deep and meat is super tender and the fried are delicious. Service is always great - staff is super friendly!
