I don’t usually leave reviews, but Okura really deserves one. It’s a bit farther than I normally drive for dinner, but lately I’ve found myself going more often—because I just feel good every time I’m there. The first time I went there was in 2009 on the recommendation of a friend who used to have a Japanese restaurant. With job changes, going back to school, and plunging headfirst into a turbulent new career with multiple job changes, I never got back there until 2022. And guess what? They remembered me! The staff is genuinely friendly. They remember what I like, and a few times I’ve described dishes that weren’t on the menu—and they made them perfectly. They actually listen, and that level of care is rare. The wine and beer selection fits my tastes really well, which is a nice bonus. Every time I visit, the atmosphere is happy and relaxed. I often see other customers come in and get greeted like old friends, and it’s clear this place means something to a lot of people. It’s not just a meal—it’s a place that lifts your mood. Okura has become one of my favorite spots. Friendly people, great food, and a warm, welcoming vibe every time.
Have eaten sushi in many places in the area and none compares to okura the food is always excellent and head sushi chef kaolin is beyond reproach

Tasty, But A little Over-priced
Okura is in my neighborhood and I love Japanese food. I ordered a Salmon Teriyaki dinner Bento box to go. It came with the usual Bento box stuff including a small salad, Miso Soup and California rolls (even substitution) for $25. The food was tasty, but they lose one star for skimping on the salmon (very small portion). They lose another star because the same order is $16 at Pike Creek (Sushi Express) or $20 elsewhere in the neighborhood. $25 might be ok for Manhattan, but prices are a little bit high for the Hockessin area.

Probably the most disgusting sushi I’ve ever eaten. It had a weird taste, put together unorganized (imitation crab was scattered all over top and rolls were placed randomly in container), and the restaurant had a strange smell when I walked in to pick the food up.

This is our second time going. We were late but luckily they still held the reservation for us. It was birthday dinner. Food was great. Got the boat for two.

I have only gotten take out- but do not discount my craving for an Okura night! The owners are so kind- I look forward to chatting with them every time.
Dietary restrictions: I am expecting so I cannot eat raw- they have so many cooked options! I didn’t have to give up sushi which was a win. They got me through my first trimester! I ordered the Okura roll with avocado and edamame, sometimes another roll for my fiancé. The ingredients are always FRESH!

I’ve been coming here for a very long time and it’s hands down the best sushi in the area.

I’ve been going here ever since I was young and never have I had a bad day. The owners are the sweetest people you will meet and always make sure you are taken care of. Personal favorite here has to be their chicken teriyaki with sticky rice. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxing, easy to get lost in conversations while you eat the amazing food.

NYE 2023 Our seating was second row from the entrance and we got blasted with frigid air each time the door opened. Apparently, there was no heat in the place. I ate with my coat on. Our main course took uncomfortably long (25+ minutes )when the table beside us had come and gone long after we ordered. The server explained the kitchen was putting out many special party platters for pick up. We were served what was described to us as a "Clam" on our deluxe platter which had a dense rubbery consistency, an appearance of a tongue. Inedible. For our inconvenience, the management sent over a complimentary dessert which was a half slice of a green gelatin pie which could be described as a gummy. The fork bounced back when an attempt was made to try it. Talk about leaving a bad taste in your mouth, that might have been the last time I ever eat sushi again, that's how bad it was.

Sushi roll was honestly nasty and the fried rice was mushy and tasted microwaved… not sure how the other reviews ended up here, but definitely will never be going back.
