The woman who works here in the morning is unhelpful and not friendly. Between her facial expressions and the way she makes you repeat yourself that implies you’re stupid, as if you’re the problem. The first day I thought maybe it was just me but the second day, I witnessed her doing it to others, right before treating me the same way for a second time. The first day I ordered a machiatto from her (my usual drink of choice) that was un drinkable. My husband, whose not picky when it comes to coffee, did not drink his either. This is definitely not a legitimate satellite location of Starbucks. The second time I ordered a small yogurt and a plain medium coffee, for a whopping $15 (more if you count the tip). It is extremely overpriced, but I guess I’m paying for convenience. I’d be more inclined to pay those prices for better service. However, the man who works there in the mornings is very friendly and accommodating. Probably the only saving grace for this place in the morning.
This is the second visit and since the first visit a year ago we decided to go again. Big mistake. Food is ok but the wait is terrible. We waited for an hour and place was not busy at all. Other tables were being served before ours. Never again. More of a bar than a restaurant and we don’t drink. Oh well now we know.
Hours are completely wrong, don't even count on being able to eat here.
This report is from the Orlando Sentinel on 8-17-21. I've been here many times in the past but It's off my rotation from now on. Read below. What stands out to me are the "bite marks" on bags of food. Byte A Modern Bistro at 145 N. Woodland Blvd. in DeLand shut down on Aug. 10 after receiving a warning on Aug. 9 The restaurant had five total violations, three of which were a high priority. Those violations included an employee touching ready-to-eat food with their bare hands, rodent activity, and a stop-sale of a food product that had chew marks on the bags of food. A call-back extension given that same day also found a high priority violation for cold food held at an inappropriate temperature. Inspectors found one basic violation on an Aug. 11 visit and allowed the restaurant to reopen.
Ridiculously overrated, I decided to drop by after seeing it full every time I went to downtown Deland. The server was also managing the bar, if you are short-staffed reduce your capacity and allow your servers to give better service don't set them up for failure. We left after appetizers and one drink.
We like this place, kind of. Very inconsistent. They have gluten free buns but they are often stale, which is a common issue since not as many people order. Each time we've gone, about 4 total, something was messed up. We got parm cheese on the green beans side which had never come in it before and isn't listed as an ingredient. My wife is dairy sensitive so the one time SHE ordered this she couldn't eat it. The roasted Brussel sprouts were mostly burned/overly charred. Oh.. there was a tip from a pen in my street taco. No joke. We accept mistakes but it's how a restaurant deals with it that's key. We were offered a 15% discount and we took it but technically we shouldn't have. We have our reasons and the main one is they should KNOW how to handle these and we don't want to quibble about things. They did ask if we wanted it remade but they should have just gone right to "we'll remake that for you". And technically not charged. I hate when I'm asked if we want it taken off the bill.. it puts the customer in an uncomfortable position like we're just looking for more food or something. There were some other issues as well but those were the big ones. The food is really good when done correctly and we like that they have gluten/dairy sensitive options but not sure if we'll come back. Oh they have a great burger with candied bacon and goat cheese that is awesome, but even that could use a little more of those toppings on it than what they put on.
We had never eaten at Byte but decided to go during Teacher Appreciation Week. Our visit was lackluster and disappointing at best!!! I would not recommend going here other than the service and server were stellar. We chose to have the fried green tomatoes appetizer...one bite did it for me. It came with a cranberry sauce which wasn't bad unto itself but it created a very metallic taste. For our main course I got the grouper and my husband had the steak tips. His risotto was ruined, as in not cooked properly, Gordon Ramsey would have set them straight. The beef tips were grainy...my grouper had the same metallic taste as the tomatoes...perhaps cooked in the same pan. To say that we were disappointed is an understatement....we both went home and made sandwiches as we did not finish our meals.
We always pop by the Byte when wandering around downtown Deland. As it was a perfect day, we had a cocktail on the exterior bar and a quick bite. Never disappoints.
I stay at Marriott hotels about 70 times a year. I had a early check in of 12:15 and upon arrival at 12:30 they told me that I cannot get into my room until 3:00. Poor communication. You would think that this is a motel 6. Also the bistro is closed because of under staffing which is not listed on the website. You would think that especially this time of year when they are pretty much booked solid that they would pay there workers better to get more employees wanting to work there
Positives: Reasonably early opening at 10:00 affords a choice of seating, both indoor and out (literally 'on the street') ... BOGO Mimosa or Bloody Mary... Varied menu selections from traditional bacon & eggs to nicely prepared eggs Benedict... reasonably priced... convenient downtown location with ample nearby parking. Negatives: Quite dark inside... somewhat awkward seating arrangements... and this morning there was an odd canned music (reggae) selection set at a conversation-killing decibel level; however, the request to ease off the volume was graciously acknowledged and shouting was no longer necessary. Overall, not the greatest ambiance nor quality, but an inoffensive and acceptable experience nonetheless. Tough to find a 4, let alone 5 ***** in this town.

I’ve never seen a hotel quite like this. Our room smelled so bad that we had to have them bring the ozone machine and clean the bathroom. Nobody ever checked with us or asked if everything was ok. Nobody ever at the front desk. Nobody anywhere. I’m Marriott titanium so I’ve stayed in many hotels. This one, sadly to say is not up to Marriott standards. I’m sure it is run by college kids with no manager. Good location.
We had reserved a block of rooms for our son's wedding. The staff was so helpful and the rooms were clean and updated. We held the rehearsal right in the lobby and also rented the banquet room for the rehearsal dinner. They helped us with everything we needed and were hands on. Thank you for making everything so easy! Would highly recommend.
This place is great. Excellent food, large portions and efficient staff. The only problem is that the wait staff did not wear a face mask. This is very disturbing with COVID spreading. Just be aware and perhaps you might not want to take children or older folks to this place until after COVID.
We wanted to celebrate our daughter's birthday at this recommended bistro. Server was knowledgeable and pleasant. We were there for lunch. The recommended (and awarded?) Grilled cheese sandwich was so greasy, it was inedible. Please tell the cook to reduce the amount of oil and let it heat up before frying the sandwich. The panko breadcrumb crusted grilled cheese sandwich absorbed all the fat and oil. Poor execution. Side dish of green beans fell victim to the same problem...be aware, your dishes are going to be Greasy! We appreciated the free dessert for our daughter's birthday, but the food is not going to make it...
The 2 year old property is located right on Woodland Ave. giving you great access to both Stetson University campus and downtown. You can just about walk to anywhere with the location. Modern rooms are nice and spacious with balconies on some. Becoming the place to stay when I come to town!
