TASTING NOTES: This is a mouthful of wine that explodes onto the palate with the strength of a complex medley of berries. Pair it with slow-grilled baby back ribs. (Tasted: September 19, 2019, San Francisco, CA) RP92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Composed o Zinfandel with Syrah, Petite Sirah and Grenache, the 2018 Red Blend 8 Years in the Desert was aged for eight months in American oak barrels (37% new). Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes roaring out of the glass with notions of baked black cherries, raspberry preserves, blueberry tart and potpourri plus hints of garrigue, tobacco leaf and cinnamon stick. Full-bodied, the richly fruited palate has a pleasantly chewy texture and loads of savory layers coming through on the finish.

Winemaker NotesIntense red color. This wine is highly complex on the nose. Predominantly aromas of well ripened red fruit and notes of liquorice and spices emerge. On the palate this wine is fresh, long, and meaty with a persistent structure of sweet and elegant tannins.JD95 Jeb DunnuckStarting with the 2018 Aalto (100% Tempranillo), this perennial winner boasts a deep purple hue as well as a rocking nose of black raspberry and cassis fruits interwoven with lots of Asian spices, cedarwood, lead pencil, chocolate, and graphite. Rich, full-bodied, and powerful, with a great mid-palate, it stays light on its feet and has a focused, pure texture, notable tannins, and a great finish. This is a head-turning, beautifully textured Ribera del Duero to enjoy over the coming decade or more.RP94 Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2018 Aalto reflects the cooler conditions of the year, with a more austere profile, subtle aromas and a harmonious palate. This is a classic example of modern, ripe and well-oaked Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, which this year feels creamy, juicy and balanced. This follows the path of 2017 with integrated oak (they used only around 20% new oak) and a lively palate in a more drinkable and approachable style. They added some new vineyards from the zone of Boada where the soils are red and the wines bring freshness and lots of fruit. The wine had a shorter maceration with the skins and a softer vinification. This is finer and more balanced, with finesse but still very much recognizable as Aalto. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020.

Winemaker Notes Immediate aromatics escape the glass: blueberry, Mirabelle plum, ripe raspberry, Bing cherry and enchanting musk. On entry, the wine is seamless and enveloping with notes of Black plum, sweet cassis and blueberry compote on the mid-palate. Textured and long on the finish, the wine closes with a hint of dried lavender and dark chocolate. About the Label The label was inspired by a collage displayed in the living room of a designer in Milan. The winemaker spent years collecting the imagery and individually piecing the snips together. Nearly four years later, his original work of art was finally completed. RP91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Proprietary Red Abstract leaps from the glass with a pretty perfume of chocolate-covered cherries, stewed plums and kirsch with hints of Chinese five spice, menthol and Ceylon tea plus a waft of wild sage. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has lovely purity with juicy black and red berry flavors and a soft texture, finishing with a minty lift. 44,322 cases were made.

Orange peel and balsamic flavors combine harmoniously the violets and red fruit notes typical from Malbec. Mineral notes and sharp acidity give this wine a character of its own. JS 97 James Suckling Beautiful purity of fruit here with blackberries, black cherries and violet undertones. Full-bodied with layers of fruit, fine tannins and a flavorful finish. Juicy and creamy at the same time. Delicious now, but better after 2023. WE 95 Wine Enthusiast An aromatic nose of red and black fruit followed by rosemary transports you to Mendoza. There is a delicious hint of licorice. Tamed by wood aging, this elegant wine has vigorous acidity and chalky tannins that are typical from Altamira. A good balance of fruit and herbs offers cherry and blackberry mixed with bay leaf and rosemary on the palate. It finishes with cherry and chocolate.

Winemaker Notes Malbec Mendoza is an inevitable reflection of the variety that is emblematic to our country, the mountainous ranges of the Andes and the sun. Composed of various vineyards, located in the major geographic references that the Cuyana province offers, this young wine, potent and velvety wine, expresses pleasure, smooth and soft, combining land and flavors in one clear strong message. This wine explains Malbec as well as Mendoza in one universal language. JS92 James Suckling Attractive cassis and blueberry aromas here with a swathe of crushed violet flowers. The palate has a very supple and smooth core of fresh red plums that offer a fleshy and smooth ride to the finish. Drink or hold. TASTING NOTES: This wine offers expansive aromas and flavors of black fruit, savory spices, and licorice. Pair it with oven-roasted short ribs. (Tasted: November 15, 2020, San Francisco, CA) TA90 Tim Atkin Achával Ferrer's "entry-point" Malbec is a pan-Mendoza blend from six sub-regions: Agrelo, Gualtallary, Los Chacayes, Medrano, Paraje Altamira and Perdriel. It's always a delight to drink with nuanced oak, glossy tannins and ample blackberry and violet notes.

Winemaker Notes Deep ruby in color, this wine offers earthy aromas and notes of dark fruits and rosemary. RP92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2014 Quimera is a blend of different red grape varieties from old vines in different places in the province of Mendoza, Perdriel in Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato in Valle de Uco and Medrano in Maipú. It is a blend of 50% Malbec, 24% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine matures in French oak barrels (80% new) for 13 moths. It's a subtle, elegant and perfumed Mendoza blend. JS92 James Suckling Tight and refined with cool, fine tannins and a fresh flower and citrus undertone. Medium to full body and a bright finish. WE91 Wine Enthusiast Tarry, fiery aromas of berry fruits and oaky spice lead to an iron-fisted palate with rubbery tannins. This blend of Malbec, Cab Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot tastes of savory berry fruits and plum. The finish is spicy and delivers lushness and beefy weight. Drink through 2022.

Winemaker Notes The wine is extremely inviting as a result. The fruit is pure, aromatic and complex, reflecting the varying terroir in this triangle of vineyards between Pesquera del Duero, Padilla and Valbuena. There is spice and weight, but also great length and class. This is a true example of contemporary Ribera made without compromise. JS96 James Suckling A very savory and succulent Alion with so much complexity of flavor with berries, chocolate and dried meat. Some cedar, too. Full body. Vertical and very long. Purity of fruit and tannins to this wine. Needs two or three years to soften. Release in 2020. Better after 2022. RP95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The highly anticipated 2016 Alión spent 12 months in oak barrels, 80% of them new and built mainly with French oak but with some 5% American oak, and some 10% of the volume matured in 15,000-liter concrete vats. It hits the scale at 15% alcohol and has moderate acidity, showing ripe black fruit and a creamy texture. 2016 has to be one of the freshest and most elegant vintages of Alión, a year with depth, freshness and terrific balance. Same as they do in Pintia, they are finding ways to lower the impact of the oak in the wine; here, they used concrete, and the wine shows more primary and floral aromas and is nicely textured and with fine tannins. 258,458 bottles, 7,017 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2018. V95 Vinous Glass-staining violet. Heady smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, incense and potpourri, plus hints of vanilla and cola in the background. Densely packed, alluringly sweet and focused on the palate, offering intense black currant, cherry-vanilla and candied licorice flavors and a touch of exotic spices. Sappy, smooth and seamless in texture, finishing with powerful thrust and velvety tannins that come in late to add shape and gentle grip. 95% French and 5% American oak, 80% of it new. Drinking window: 2025 - 2035.

Hints of vanilla and blueberry playfully mingle, leading into a long, dry finish that returns to a serious note, with tannins that are luxuriously fine.More than 40 years after he and his parents founded Caymus Vineyards, Chuck Wagner undertook a new project: creating a Cabernet Sauvignon from a broader stretch of California farmland. He was guided by the memory of enjoying family meals, always accompanied by a good glass of wine. Chuck wanted to create delicious Cabernet that would be more widely accessible, made from places worthy of exploration and discovery.And so, Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon was born, celebrating the "bonanza" or fortune to be found in our great state. As Chuck puts it, "We are proud to be making this multi-vintage California-appellation Cabernet Sauvignon. Do you have any idea how much fun this is for a seasoned winemaker?" Bonanza calls back to a simpler time, and Chuck's hope is that it will invite people to enjoy good wine as a simple pleasure of everyday life.

Winemaker Notes The nose is rich in aromas and pronounced in intensity. There is striking ripe red fruit, later we get the wood nuances with gently sweet notes of vanilla to finish with other sweet spices. On the palate it is perfumed, soft and fresh with a long finish that leaves memories of red fruit, vanilla and cocoa. Perfect with pasta, poultry and fresh light cheeses, grilled chicken, small bites (light cheese, grilled vegetables). Winemaker Notes Catena Alta is an assemblage of historic rows within the Catena family Estate vineyards. The blend of these historic rows, like the marriage of sounds that create a symphony, yields a highly aromatic and elegant wine that speaks for the earth and the vines that have been tended by the Catenas for four generations. The Catena Alta wines can usually be drunk starting at three years after harvest and into the following one to two decades. RP93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2018 Catena Alta Malbec shows more evolution and ripeness than the 2019. It's varietal and floral with a mixture of red and black fruit, sweet spices and aromatic herbs. It has moderate ripeness-in fact, it's a little lower in alcohol than the 2019-a medium body and fine-grained tannins, with good grip. 162,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2019.

This has mind-boggling quality for the quantity-they produce 2.5 million bottles of it! One to buy by the case. Rating: 91+

The fermentation temperature is kept low, extracting intense aromas, and the cap management is done by hand to ensure soft, gentle flavors and tannin extraction. Wild yeasts. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel leaves considerable lees and sediment. Red Schooner by Caymus Voyage 11 MalbecGrapes for this Malbec are grown in the Andes Mountains of Argentina, then chilled and transported by ocean voyage to Caymus, where we use our winemaking techniques to create a style that is dense, dark and supple. Falling outside standard labeling rules, Red Schooner does not include a vintage date but is known by the voyage from which it traveled (Voyage 11 is the 2021 vintage). Strikingly smooth, with scents and flavors of dark fruit and fine, textural tannins.

Winemaker NotesA regal maroon rimmed with purple, the 2018 vintage features rich, enveloping scents of French plums and German chocolate cake. A hint of pomace, vanilla, and floral potpourri adds freshness to the nose, while the wood on this wine cradles but never defines the fruit. On the palate, dark berry flavors mingle with tannins, each expanding again and again to march the other. Delicious!V91 VinousDelightfully textured and smooth with balanced yet mouthwatering acidity, this wine veers into the green hedgerow spectrum of Sauvignon; think nettles and elderflowers rather than flamboyant tropical fruits. That said, there's a subtle flavor of passion fruit running through this wine. Midweight with some decent concentration, it offers nice grip on the medium-plus-length finish. Don't chill the hell out of this or you'll miss the best bits. I've given a drinking window of 2020–2025 but having tasted a delightful 14-year-old Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc that tastes like a mature Sémillon, I can say that you're not in any danger if you leave it longer. Drinking window: 2020 - 2024

Deep red color with violet tones, this blend is highly concentrated with substantial body and structure. The nose displays aromas of blueberries, blackberries, chocolate, and spice. Sweet and soft tannins linger on a long finish. JS 94 James Suckling Focused palate with polished, integrated tannins that give a beautiful mouth feel to the wine, while framing the currant and light dark-chocolate flavors. WS 90 Wine Spectator This juicy red is loaded with cooking spice accents to its lively mix of dark fruit, red berry and mineral flavors. The creamy finish is supported by medium-grained tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot.

Dante Pinot Noir has a brightly perfumed nose with aromas of fresh strawberries, red plum, and candied cherry, with a light cinnamon spiciness. Winemaker NotesPSI is the 23rd letter in the Greek alphabet and is the name of Peter Sisseck's (of the coveted Pingus and Flor de Pingus) utopian wine from Ribera del Duero. Peter has sought out the best independent vineyard growers in Ribera and is incentivizing them to improve viticultural practices and shun chemicals, lower yields and practice biodynamics by paying them increasingly for the fruit as they improve. The result is a "give back" to the region wine that also expresses the "soul" of Ribera.JS94 James SucklingBlackberry and black-cherry aromas with lavender, cedar and hints of cloves and white pepper, following through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful, creamy finish. A little tight and reserved now. Another impressive PSI. Give it until 2022.RP93 Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2020 PSI combines their knowledge of the vineyards and their new winery. They learned a lot in 2018, a more heterogeneous vintage, and their sorting machine for grapes had to work a lot. 2019 was more homogeneous, an easier harvest when most people made better wine. In the winery, they invested in a simple building but top technology. They used some 10% Garnacha in the blend, which was done one year after aging the lots separately. It really reminds me of the young wines from Ribera del Duero from the early 1990s, with some aromas of orange peel, earthy and smoky (very mild) and with fine-grained tannins. It has good ripeness at 14% alcohol and integrated acidity but great balance. It showcases the style of the 2019s here, fresher than expected and still a sunny vintage, when 2018 was more crystalline. A triumph over the natural conditions of the year. Rating: 93+

Winemaker Notes This Cabernet Franc is ruby red in color with soft violet tones. The nose has intense aromas and concentrated notes of cassis, ripe currants, and sweet spices including black pepper and cloves. His tenure provides integrated oak notes of cedar and vanilla. Fresh impact and excellent structure on the palate, reminiscent of ripe red fruits with hints of eucalyptus and tagged black pepper. This wine has an excellent balance and elegance with a well-structured, persistent finish.Pair this Cabernet Franc with grilled game meats.Critical AcclaimRP93 Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe expressive and elegant 2017 El Enemigo Cabernet Franc has some 8% Malbec in the blend. Winemaker NotesAlejandro Vigil is a master of Chardonnay, as well as a man who likes to push boundaries, which is why this impressive white was made with a little flor, just like a Fino Sherry. Toasty, spicy and salty, this is briney and refreshing with some honeyed notes.JS97 James SucklingThis is another rock-star chardonnay from here with dried-apple, pear-skin, crushed-stone and peach-pit character. Full body. Creamy texture. Phenolic form and a long, flavorful finish.RP93 Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe textbook 2018 El Enemigo Chardonnay had varietal aromas and notes from the barrel, giving it a very attractive profile. But there is a secret: the barrels develop some flor yeasts in the style of Jerez (or Jura) and this gives the wine a spicy twist, hints of curry and white pepper. The wine is silky and the very high acidity is not noticeable. This is a great commercial success, and at the price, it offers great value.

The facility is named for the unique aspect of Mendoza's high altitude winemaking region nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains.Tasting NotesRich and concentrated, it offers aromas of black fruit, cherry and dark berryfruit on the nose followed in the palate by a full-bodied wine with flavors of spice, blackberry, black cherry, pepper and a slight floral character. The brightness and verve of the blend lasts past the smoke of the oak and brings a sense of freshness to the blackberry flavors. It's modern but balanced, especially if there's a double-cut pork chop on hand.

This is about chalk and umami, salty and tasty, with the clout and wilderness of Gualtallary; its electric freshness and fine tannins; the expression of Cabernet Franc (with some Merlot) in the poor, stony and limestone-rich soils from the high-altitude vineyards; and the intensity this altitude provides, as there is a strong impact from the light in the grapes. But the one thing that I liked the most about this 2016 was its balance and the way it feels light but has tremendous concentration and power, light on its feet with masses of inner strength. It's nuanced and complex, even if it's terribly young. With time in the glass, it developed notes of orange peel that spoke of freshness, and the palate is sharp and direct, with symmetry and precision. So drinkable now, but will improve with age.D93 DecanterAlejandro Vigil has made Cabernet Franc from four different vineyards in the Uco Valley, and this one from the Los Chacayes GI has turned out to be the most wild and original of the quartet. A deep violet in colour, the floral nose offers a decent amount of red fruit, berries and spice from an ageing process that managed to tame the natural power of the terroir. Velvety in the mouth with juicy acidity and chalky tannins, this is a red for daring palates.

They are situated on chalky and sandy hillside soils with excellent drainage, allowing them to ripen in optimal conditions. The production does not exceed one ton per acre. The Cabernet and Syrah vineyards are located at 2,300 feet above sea level with an average vine age of 15 years. The fermentation is carried out separately in small open tank fermenters. They use 100% new oak that is a mixture of French and American. The wine is ripe, oaky and heady (15.5% alcohol), but I felt a change in the oak, which seemed more integrated. When I asked Miguel Gil, he told me they had changed the toast, using less toasted barrels, from medium+ to medium, and that shows in the wine. They still believe this wine should have new oak to give it aging potential. They have also introduced optical sorting of the grapes and eliminate the raisins (by shape) and the unripe grains (by color), and that adds precision and cleanliness. 30,000 bottles were produced. So, the only one of the extended-aging Haro-style reds I tasted this time was the 2011 Gran Reserva 904, which had a hard act to follow after the 2010 vintage. It's a blend of 89% Tempranillo and 11% Graciano matured in American oak barrels for four years, and it was racked eight times from barrel to barrel during its élevage, which sounds a bit harsh for a vintage like 2011 when the wines were not as complete and robust as in 2010. It has the classic profile, aromas and flavors (decayed leaves, tobacco, sweet spices, a meaty touch and some black fruit), but the oak seems to take a more leading role and the palate feels less juicy. It finishes dry.

Indulgent with medium volume, the structure is delivered by the slightly reactive tannins. Leaves a whiff of plum behind at the end.

The 2019 Mauro was selected from their 90 hectares of organically farmed vineyards and fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. It is mostly Tempranillo with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah that adds freshness and floral aromas. It's a lighter and more approachable vintage than 2018, a more immediate wine, more approachable but in a way less complex.

Pays d'Oc Languedoc, France Grape Variety 100% Cinsault About the Producer Close to the producers, and in order to source from the best vineyards, our winemaker has found some amazing "terroirs" in the South of France. The Languedoc climatic conditions allow a perfect maturation for the grapes which are moderated by the humid influence of the Mediterranean. Vineyard Mont Gravet Rosé comes from specially selected Cinsault vineyards in the Languedoc region, located near the warm Mediter- ranean shoreline in Southern France. The Cinsault variety is also one of the main varietals used in the production of Provence rosé and some of the best reds of the Southern Rhone Valley. Winemaking Harvested at night the grapes when it is coolest, the grapes undergo a modern winemaking process of 100% direct pressing with temperature carefully controlled and monitored through-out the entire production process. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Alcohol: 11.75% Tasting Notes Mont Gravet Rosé is a wonderfully fresh and fruit forward dry Rosé wine. The wine has lovely aromas of raspberry and blackberry and is full body and long on the palate. Food Match This Rosé is a wonderful "anytime" wine and a delicious aperitif. It pairs well with a wide variety of foods, as it's refreshing, savory and well-balanced. It will accompany beautifully any salads, fish, BBQ and white meat dishes.

The wine is fined with egg whites and kept in bottle for a further 12 months before it's released. I had the wine in the glass for a very long time, and it didn't stop improving; it started a little lactic and creamy, and then it got more and more serious. This is the only red they produced this vintage, so all the best grapes that normally go to other wines were used here; those selected grapes helped to keep the volume of this cuvée, and at the same time, it seems to have boosted the quality of this wine, which feels every bit as good as the 2016. It has a serious palate with fine, chalky tannins and very good balance. This is a textbook Muga red and a triumph over the conditions of the year, elegant and balanced, approachable now and with potential to age.

In 2017, they sourced Cabernet Sauvignon from Altamira and Gualtallary, and it fermented together with the juice of the Cabernet Franc. It has a touch of ripeness in the nose but without excess; it's balsamic, with the Cabernet dominating the aromatics. The palate comes through as really balanced and perhaps a little lighter. It has very fine tannins and a clean, focused finish. 78,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018. Winemaker Notes Nicolás Catena Zapata has an intense, deep purple color with bluish-black tones. On the nose, aromas of black fruits – blackberries, black cherries, black plums – predominate with subtle notes of vanilla and dark chocolate intermingled with savory hints of green olive and a stony minerality. It was produced with 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Merlot that went through a three- to four-day cold soak and fermented with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in stainless steel. The élevage was in new and used 225-liter oak barrels and 21,000-liter oak vats. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.8 and 4.78 grams of acidity (tartaric), so it's ripe and with mellow acidity that gives it a mellow mouthfeel. This is a very spicy vintage for Valbuena, getting closer to the style of Único (while at the same time I felt the 2018 Pintia from Toro was getting closer to the aromatics of some vintages of Valbuena, like 2010). It was a late-ripening year with a tendency toward freshness in the wines. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with very fine tannins that made the wine nicely textured and very elegant. There is a lot of regularity in the Valbuena of the last few years, here with more tension and freshness of the 2017, a little more balsamic even.

We had the BEST lunch here! Josue was simply the best waiter! Very attentive, knowledgeable and a great attitude. You can tell he and the staff care about the customer and they know their food. We visit this place frequently, and it’s usually a good experience. However, today was very disappointing. We were seated but waited an unusually long time without receiving the menu, water, or any acknowledgment from the staff. After a lengthy wait, we chose to leave, but briefly came back to tell the manager, who was courteous. Unfortunately, our decision to leave had already been made. It’s clear that improvements are needed.
