Found this seafood market a few years ago and it's my favorite in all of Florida, and I'm a born raised Floridians.

I just had one of the best lunches I’ve had in a long time at Barnhill Seafood Market. The smoked salmon with pineapple salsa was hands down the best smoked salmon I have ever had in my life. Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. Absolute heaven.

I paired it with a slice of pie and it made for the most delicious and healthy island lunch. The quality of the seafood here is outstanding and the whole place has such a relaxed Bokeelia charm.

If you’re anywhere near Pine Island, this is a must stop. Fresh seafood, incredible flavors, and a perfect taste of island life.

Nice seafood market. Person behind the counter was very helpful. Very active on social media so know what and when fish are in stock. Big parking lot. Across the street from Blue Dog.

Barnhill Seafood Market offered a variety of fresh whole fish and filets. I purchased the yellow eyed snapper filets as well as the mangrove snapper filets. Both varieties were the freshest fish I have ever experienced!

We lightly seasoned with a Paul Prudhomme blackened seasoning and seared in a skillet. They were deliciously flaky and fresh. I highly recommend visiting this market for your next fresh seafood meal prepared at home!

Unfortunately, only a 2.5 today…

1. Leaving work at 4:25 pm today (I’m a local full time resident who has shopped here frequently for the past 2 years), I called your store with the intent of asking 1) if there was any fresh snapper available for purchase, and if so, advise the on duty employee I was about 10 minutes from arriving and would be there shortly to make a purchase of about 1 1/2 pounds of filet for a two person meal. I was greeted by a voicemail recording which stated something to the effect of “Hello, it’s February 5th, (today is February 25 by the way) we are closed today as we are having some equipment installed and will be open tomorrow.” Again, I may not have that exactly correct, but I think you can get the point. 2) Upon arrival, approximately 4:45 pm (the store closes at 5), I observe an employee rushing about who exclaimed to her co-worker she needed to leave for a personal errand, and that she was departing immediately (paraphrasing, not quoting). The other employee advised her not to worry about it and turned her attention to me, and seemed “irritated” that someone was in the store so close to closing time. I looked into the cooler and saw a sign for Red Snapper, as the employee was stacking approximately 2-3 pounds worth of fresh filet onto butcher paper, then slipping the bundle into a plastic bag (I was the only customer in the lobby). I asked if there was “cleaned red snapper” available for sale. The employee, in what seemed to be a “trite” tone stated, “Sorry, this is spoken for, we don’t have any more.” I noticed another variety of fish in the cooler, inquired about it (the last filet of that variety), and was again told, “Sorry, we are all out of that too,” in a tone which seemed to reflect “I really wish you hadn’t come in here so close to closing, I’m ready to get outa here.”

I’m not a mind reader, I can only base my interpretation of this employee’s state of mind as a result of body language, vocal tone, and her interaction with me.

In all fairness, when my day’s over, I want it to be over too…when my day’s over. However, the store was still open for another 15 minutes. AND…from prior experiences with this same market, I KNOW they are never “all out of” much of anything, the freezer is big…

All this said, if I encounter this “attitude” again in the future, I can assure, as good as the fish has been in the past, not to mention Karen’s Key Lime Pie, I will absolutely use another market (even though it’s 15 miles farther of a drive) for all of my future fresh fish purchases, and will learn to make Karen’s Key Lime Pie…problem solved.

I had the pleasure of meeting the new owners on Tuesday. Just after a boat came in with scamp and triggerfish. These are my two favorite seafood dishes living here in Southwest Florida. They were fresh and tasted delicious.
