I attended the grand opening night of this all-you-can-eat buffet with my family and a few friends—a group of 9 in total, including adults and kids. We were excited to try it out, especially with crab legs featured prominently. While I appreciate the owner’s effort in coming out to speak with guests and offering complimentary ice cream cups (chocolate or vanilla) to the table, particularly for the kids, the overall experience fell short of expectations given the high price point. The total bill came to over $320, covering 2 adult crab leg portions, 2 kids’ crab legs, 3 adult buffets, 2 kids’ chicken tender meals, and drinks (5 sodas and 4 waters). To break it down respectfully: Price: At roughly $35–$40 per person on average (factoring in kids’ pricing), this felt significantly overpriced for the value delivered. For context, my family of 4 alone accounted for about $160, which I’ve never spent on a comparable meal elsewhere, even at higher-end spots internationally. Quality of Food: The buffet selection was limited, with only fried chicken as a non-seafood protein option alongside shrimp, baked beans, cheese grits, green beans, fried okra, and a decent salad bar. The kids’ chicken tender meals were disappointing—essentially a plain chicken breast cut in half, paired with burnt-looking fries that came out 20 minutes after the rest of us began eating. The star attraction, the crab legs, were unfortunately the saltiest I’ve ever encountered, making them difficult to enjoy. Adults managed only about 3 clusters each, and the kids just 1. The buffet started sparse upon our arrival but improved slightly as the evening progressed. Service and Ambiance: Drink service took around 20 minutes after ordering, though the restaurant was far from busy (only 2–3 other small families). The interior felt dated, with visible carpet stains and an unpleasant odor upon entry, which detracted from the dining experience. It’s clear this is a new venture, and opening night comes with challenges—kudos to the owner for being present and engaging directly with patrons, as that personal touch was genuinely appreciated. That said, for the pricing to feel justified, some enhancements could elevate the restaurant to a must-visit spot. Recommendations to Improve the Restaurant and Justify the Pricing 1. Enhance Food Quality and Variety for Better Value PerceptionFocus on refining core items like the crab legs (e.g., consistent seasoning and freshness testing to avoid over-salting) and expanding protein options with grilled or baked alternatives alongside fried chicken. Upgrade kids’ meals to proper tenders with well-prepared sides, and introduce 1–2 premium rotating specials (e.g., grilled fish or steak tips) to broaden appeal. This would make the buffet feel more abundant and premium, aligning with the all-you-can-eat promise. 2. Prioritize Facility Refresh and Operational Efficiency Invest in deep cleaning, carpet replacement or covering, and improved ventilation to eliminate odors and create a welcoming atmosphere—first impressions are crucial for repeat visits. On the service side, streamline staffing for faster drink delivery and proactive buffet replenishment, especially during slower periods. These updates would make the space feel modern and well-maintained, enhancing perceived value without major overhauls. 3. Elevate the Overall Guest Experience with Thoughtful Touches Build on the owner’s positive interaction by training staff for warmer, more attentive service and considering small upgrades like house-made desserts or a dedicated ice cream station instead of store-bought options. Offering early-bird specials or family packages could also help attract more diners while refining operations post-opening. These steps would foster loyalty and position the restaurant as a worthwhile destination at its price point. Wishing the owner and team success—there’s great potential here with some polishing! I’d be open to giving it another try in a few months.
This restaurant came to town and I’m happy to say I love it. We go there often. The food is always good and the service is too! The owner greets us almost every visit. Just a good experience all around. I’ll definitely be long time patron
We were down from Jacksonville for lunch. Food was delicious and Staff members were all amazing. Great local spot, small family business. Very reasonable great value. 10 out of 10 for buffet style food. Perfectly seasoned, there was Salt and Pepper on the table but no reason to use it. Thanks again for the great lunch August 24th.
Went for the first time last Sunday and will def be back! I think our waitress was Kenzie and she was amazing and extremely nice! Met pop himself and he was great! Will definitely be back. Great food and people!
We drove almost an hour, and it was totally worth it! McKenzie, our waitress was fantastic and the food was excellent! We definitely enjoyed the fried chicken, and collard greens.
Visited for the first time tonight and we were not disappointed! Our crew was hungry after a full day on the water and this place hit the spot! The Staff were friendly, service was great and the food was top notch. The crab legs and fried shrimp were the best we’ve had. Highly recommend!
Tonight was our 3rd time here in less than a few weeks, it's that good. But, it's not just the food. See, I'm mom to a 13 yo autistic and intellectually disabled child. Going out in public is a CHORE! I have to make sure everything is just right, or we have a loud meltdown. We had already been school clothes shopping all day, he and I both were over stimulated and tired. When the waitress came to take our order, I said, "I know this is a huge ask, but he wants a Cheeseburger but it can't be hot. He'll flip out and I'll have to sit here and fan it to cool it down. Could y'all possibly let it sit for a little while to cool off before bringing it out?" Not only did she say yes but she did it in a way to make me feel so comfortable and less stressed. When the burger came out, it was perfect temp for him, he could eat right away without mommy having to cool it down! I don't know if anyone else will understand how much this meant to me, but I had tears in my eyes, I was so grateful and relieved. I wish I could remember her name, I'm sorry I don't. But, thank you! Thank you to the staff that knew he was different and stopped to give him high fives and talk to him. My momma heart is full and glowing. 💜
very delicious!!! service was great and we all felt very welcomed! thank yall!
We first visited Pops at the Salt Springs location based on reviews we were seeing on Facebook. We traveled from the Newberry area and it was well worth the time. Seafood buffet was full of good things but the crab legs were next level!! We have eaten at higher end restaurants that served AYCE crab legs that they kept in a warmer. By the time you got to the bottom of the pile those weren’t any good. We loved how each batch came out fresh and hot. We’ve now traveled to eat at their Palatka location which is a little further for us but we enjoy the location more - more space but still the same great food. Go visit and support local. :-)
Great food, and great atmosphere! Amanda was our server and was a absolute sweetheart! Cups were never empty!
