It wasn't until after my visit that a friend shared that the owners of The American quietly sold the restaurant. Unfortunately, it shows.
The social media has gone downhill quality, as has the food. The cornbread chicken was dry and overcooked, the mac and cheese was the not the normal blue fontina mac and cheese and instead of the collard greens it came with canned green beans.
My family had the heirloom tomato pie, which has always been a favorite and the cornbread. Both were lacking in flavor but felt very greasy.
I hope new ownership works to restore the legacy this place once held, because right now, I do not think they have the experience or skill to create their dishes.

First time here. My pork steak was good. However, the steak my friend ordered was overdone when requested rare and fish sandwich and potatoes was cold

From out of town and brought a couple of clients to The American for a business lunch. Perfect atmosphere for this kind of lunch and the food was delicious. Service was top notch and I would highly recommend.

Maybe I just went on a bad day. Was greeted by a hostess with a frown. Found the lunch menu to be quite limited. The pimento cheese was ordinary, the tomato pie as nothing more than a pie crust filled with melted cheese and a couple tomato slices on top. My lunch partner ordered a steak that tasted old and bland. On the upside, the tea was good and our server polite and attentive. Would I drive all the way to Bainbridge to eat there again? Probably not. Lesson learned Tallahassee has much better restaurants.

Amazing food! I’ll definitely be back. We drove over from Dothan just for dinner and it was well worth the trip. Our group tried several appetizers: the cornbread, charcuterie board, shrimp, & crab dip. Everything was great, but the cornbread was the star of the show! 😮‍💨😋 We got pretty full from the apps, but still made room for entrees. I had the crab cakes - soooo good! The trout, ribeye, and chicken & shrimp pasta that my friends ordered looked just as amazing.

We received great service and were able to meet the owner before we left, who was really kind. And we also happened to be there while a celebrity was present. So random considering we were in Bainbridge! Lol. But it was a pleasant surprise.

Overall excellent experience! Looking forward to returning!

The food was so-so, but it took almost an hour to get a turkey sandwich and a burger

Have salt pepper and hot sauce on the table!

We had a party of nine that traveled about an hour to visit The American. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We shared tastes from each others choices. The comments were all positive and a couple said this is the best meal they could remember anytime anywhere. There were some wanting to make a monthly trip. Exquisite experience.

We have enjoyed The American many times and have always had great food and great service. We enjoy the good size portions and unique, but not odd combinations of flavors. It's a favorite for date night and we look forward to bringing friends along to experience this great place!

ONE VISIT
But, pretty good.
We had the tomato pie. If it had twice the tomato it would be awesome. The filling is too rich by itself.
I had a burger orderednni7mn medium but delivered basically raw. It was quickly replaced by a proper example.
My wife had a snapper sandwich, said it was great.

Loved everything except for the turkey pimento sandwich. It wasn’t warm and fell apart. And the cornbread tasted great but was room temp. The portions are huge. Great atmosphere and server. We’ll be back to try more!
