This is absolutely the best Cake Bakery I have found. I have been searching for the perfect cake place for many years, and across many states. When family moved the to the Atlanta area we needed to find a place for those special celebrations. We stumbled upon a review of this place online and gave it a try, and now it’s our go to Cake Bakery in the Atlanta area. I even ask my family to bring a cake from Southern Sweets when we have gatherings out of town! I wish they would expand their online order and shipping catalog so we wouldn’t have to have people carrying cakes on planes! That overhead bin space is getting really crowded. :)

Prices are written on chalk board up high and no prices on display cases. Probably not a problem for most people but a lot of older people have difficulty looking up. Not all items on board were available.

Mmmmmmmmm! The Herman chocolate cake slide was delicious! I was in the area and stopped by after seeing the sign several times on trips to the DeKalb International Market. Although I stopped in about 10 minutes before closing, they greeted me as if it was still the middle of the day. Very friendly service! There were so many cake options and some pie options as well. They also do other deli type sandwiches and things the entrance is full of the eclectic artistic work on the walls, but it’s a nice seating area if you choose to stay and eat. Because it was the end of the workday I chose to take my cake to-go. I was surprised that the German chocolate cake was actually chocolate cake with coconut “German chocolate” frosting and some addition regular chocolate frosting atriums the top edges. I’ve never had it prepared that way, but it was good. I was craving sweet, and that’s what I got. I’ll be back again to try other items on the menu. Oh, and I loved the Reserved Parking signs for customers.
I drove all the way from Vinings to Decatur specifically for the tuna melt, only to leave extremely disappointed. I walked into Southern Sweets at 2:59 and was greeted right away. I asked for a second to look at the desserts, and by 3:01 I turned to order—just two minutes later only to be told, “Unfortunately, our kitchen literally closed one minute ago.”
I politely asked if an exception could be made since I was already inside before closing, but the answer was still no. Instead, I was told I could order cake. At that point, I didn’t want cake I wanted the sandwich I had driven across town for.
The lack of flexibility and customer service left a bad taste in my mouth, and I won’t be returning. A business that can’t extend basic courtesy to a customer who arrived before closing isn’t one worth my time or money.

Wow this sweet spot only gets better with time. It’s been a while since I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Southern Sweets. The atmosphere is still cozy and inviting, the food is spectacular and the staff is still amazing. Don’t pass up the opportunity to experience this Decatur treasure!
