It’s permanently closed. It used to be a very good place with horrible parking. Apparently the owner made a very quick decision and did not alert even the employees

Sweet Melissa’s closed for good on March 6th 2022. Owners retired after more than 30 years on Decatur Square. We’ll miss them and their yummy breakfasts!

This is an unfortunate first google review to make but one I sadly had to write. I went here to eat brunch this past Sunday with my date. Unfortunately myself and my date both found our food undercooked. I found my bacon, eggs, grits and French toast (what they call the Mad Platter) to be more heated up than freshly made. My date had a southern breakfast sandwich, and said it was meh. We hadn't eaten anything else since the prior evening and were hungry so we decided it was just bad and ate it anyways which turned out to be a poor decision.Hours later my date and I were both unfortunately feeling incredibly ill and both ended up getting severely sick Sunday evening. We both were vomiting the entire evening and both weren't able to sleep that night as a result. Monday was ok but we still were feeling ill and had trouble keeping other food down. It is now Tuesday and we both still do not feel 100%. I have never experienced food poisoning before but would not recommend this experience to anyone.I know this restaurant did not mean for this to happen but I can't shake this experience and the fact this happened to us both after eating here. The staff was accommodating and it is a cute place but I've never had breakfast food for myself that has been as poor quality. This is the only time I've eaten here before and it will unfortunately be the last. Hopefully this doesn't happen to anyone else at this restaurant going forward but this overall unfortunately ended up being a very unpleasant experience overall.

We live nearby and have always wanted to try this place since it gets good reviews and always has a lot of people waiting. Well... we finally got to try and it and I'm very confused by the hype. The food was mediocre and even saying that is generous. My husband couldn't even eat his potato's or bacon because they tasted boiled and was undercooked. My mad platter was not good either, pancake was cold, fruit was subpar and wilted. The woman who brought us out our food was very odd and didn't say words just handed the food out and then stood there staring at us. All of the other staff was kind and attentive though. We will not be returning and do not recommend. There are quite a few other breakfast places nearby that are much better options.

We arrived at Sweet Melissa's around 1:45 on a Saturday afternoon for brunch. It took a few minutes to be acknowledged as we waited by the hostess stand even though the restaurant was not full. After we were seated, we waited about 15 minutes at our table without any menus or drink orders taken- we had to alert the employees that nobody had helped us yet. Another few minutes go by and a woman takes our drink order and gives us menus. We then wait ANOTHER 10 minutes before we had to remind a different waitress that we didn't have our waters. After over 30 minutes of horrible service, no drinks, and 4 different waitresses, we finally got our food. The food was very good. This was some of the worst service I've ever experienced in my life. Just the food was about 4.5 stars, but the service may make me never come back again.

I like their vegan sloppy Joe but I wish they would add more vegan options in the future, especially on the breakfast menu, like a vegan breakfast hash or avocado toast!

Great spot for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Cheerful atmosphere. The food was great and the servers were attentive.

A true Decatur must go to! The food is excellent, ridiculous portions, and great prices. Try my favorite the shrimp omelet!

We came for brunch on Christmas Eve - it was packed but worth the wait (about 20min for group of 3). The servers are pretty quick and the food is made in the kitchen to the side. I ordered shrimp grits ($14) and got french toast as my side (an extra $1.50). The shrimp grits were SO GOOD, I would definitely recommend it. It had cajun seasoning on the grits and the shrimp was seasoned very well. The portion was very filling, I had to take the rest as leftovers. The challah french toast was also very good and better than your average restaurant french toast. My friend had the polenta cake, which was a unique dish and also good. It's basically baked grits with cheese along with scrambled eggs. There's a bit of parking in the front and street parking as well, you pay through the meter ($3 for an hour) or the app ($3.50ish for an hour).

My friend and I decided to have brunch there. My friend got the Nutella Pancakes. I got the Strawberry French Toast and a side of grits. If you know me by now you I love some grits. Their grits were pretty good.

Sweet Melissa's strikes me as the kind of place that's reliable -- a solid local spot that is always there for you in terms of food quality and quantity. I always appreciate a spot that offers a yummy breakfast quesadilla, and this one was filling. The biscuit was also solid, a bit more soft than I'm used to but still delicious, especially with the jam on the table. Nothing here was particularly "mindblowingly wow" for me, but it was solid, fresh, and well-made. Do note that they don't serve espresso-based drinks here, if you look for that with your brunch, but no harm done because you can get some fantastic ones made with Counter Culture beans at B-side right around the corner.

Get there early because there is a wait but it's well worth it. It's not just the food that creates the experience it's the customer service as well. The staff had great energy, always checking on us to make sure we were ok, and the food was exceptionally good. I highly recommend it here and encourage you to wait because it's well worth it.
