Anyone not familiar with the area should know that all along Covington Hwy is Jamaican restaurant row. I have wanted to try this place for a while because it's one of three that is a standalone restaurant and not in a strip mall and reviewers have talked about its ambiance. My friend and I enjoyed it well enough to give it another shot, once many of COVID restrictions are lifted.

Anyone not familiar with the area should know that all along Covington Hwy is Jamaican restaurant row. I have wanted to try this place for a while because it's one of three that is a standalone restaurant and not in a strip mall and reviewers have talked about its ambiance. I was taking a friend who has been fiending for Jamaican food since her trip to Jamaica. We both wanted to come someplace that had a dine in experience. One thing though, I live in the area and we still managed to pass it- twice. With the days being shorter and darker, my friend suggested that they take some of the lights that are in the window and them on the street sign so it's easier to see where the entrance is. The parking lot isn't well paved. Then we heard the music and said, "This must be the ambiance people were talking about." So we're bobbing our heads thinking it must be live music, but it was a speaker on a van. But that was ok. We felt transported temporarily to another land.We kept seeing people getting plates from the back of the kitchen and thought those were just the takeout orders and insistently went into the dining area- the darkened dining area. I could tell that if that area was open for business, it would have a nice tropical vibe. Disappointed, we joined the people at the back. Ordering is simple. They just have 5--6 things on the menu and only take cash or Cash App. I would have preferred a veggie plate, but I was fine to try the j*** chicken. This is where I give them a plus. They had a young person helping and this community business is surviving. So many larger venues have had to drastically scale down or just simply give up due to COVID and here they are trying to make the best of things. The service was pleasant and one of the servers even helped my friend work the Cash App. She also offered for us to sit in the outdoor area, so we were hoping our dine in hopes would be salvaged, but the few seating there was was occupied already. And she said there were drinks at the outside bar area, but we didn't see any, so we left.So the verdict on the food? The chicken has a smoky but not marinated flavor. I had to fight the gristle and fat on my pieces and I wish there had been more white meat. I was glad the rice had peas in it because in some places, peas are extra or not included, but my friend and I agreed that having brown stew gravy poured over it would have taken it over the top. The sauce they did provide we agreed was more hot than flavorful, but I liked it mixed in with the rice. However, it was a little hot as a dipping sauce for my chicken. Really cleaned my sinuses out. My friend was really looking forward to cabbage but we got tomatoes instead and I would have liked the option of cabbage, callaloo, or other greens. I am not normally a plantain person but these were the bomb.Final verdict is that I will definitely try them again when COVID loosens its grip and restaurants can be dine in again. The dining area looks cozy and like a little slice of the islands. And even if the music is piped in, I just want to experience being transported away in the midst of an urban area.
