This place has haunted my dreams for 13 years since I left Hawaii. I used to come here with my father for pork chops and ono all the time and it's one of my favorite memories. We returned to the island this past month and this was my number one place I wanted to visit. Not a thing has changed, and I say that in the best way possible. Friendly service, giant portion sizes, they still have the best pork chops in the entire world. We literally planned our excursions around when the restaurant was open to make sure we were able to come here. Definitely stop in if you get the opportunity. Promise you won't be disappointed.
We had a lovely meal at Manago Hotel Restaurant, a place with over a century of history, originally founded by a Japanese immigrant during the Meiji era. Although the Manago Hotel itself is currently being acquired and converted into affordable workforce housing, the restaurant—Hawaii’s oldest continuously operating one—remains open and continues to serve under new ownership. The Manago family has even agreed to share their iconic recipes, including their famous pork chops.
When you enter the restaurant, you can still feel traces of its Japanese roots—from the simple, nostalgic decor to the rice bowls and dishware, many of which are traditionally Japanese.
The menu is small but thoughtfully curated. Each meal comes with three traditional side dishes, giving it a comforting, homemade feel. We ordered the Pork Chops ($19.50 + 50¢ for gravy) and the Butterfish ($23.50 + 50¢ for miso sauce). The pork chops were hearty and satisfying, but the standout was the butterfish. It was incredibly flavorful, and the miso sauce complemented the tender fish beautifully.
If you're looking for authentic local flavors served in a place full of history and cultural heritage, this is the perfect spot.😊✨
Nice people , great food. Historical
This is no longer a hotel, only a restaurant. The hotel closed over a year ago. Website is inaccurate.

What a gem! Valentine special was amazing. Steak cooked great. Shimp succulent, asparagus perfect. The mashed potatoes were a little chunky b
Did not stay here but ate at the restaurant. Pork chops with gravy was awesome. Sides of sticky rice, cabbage, beans and a unique potato/pasta salad made for a filling meal. Quaint little place with some views of the ocean.
Love it! Even mention in our bed and breakfast newsletter to letter to our guests
The pork chop and Opakapaka are to die for!
What a wonderful place. There are so few old Hawaiian dining rooms left. Manago is special. We miss the neon! I hope they bring it back.
Food and drinks: Classic family style Hawaiian.

What an amazing restaurant, for which is one of the oldest restaurants in the big Island.. It really has it's old rustic charm of yesteryears. I really love their amazing pork chops for which it probably was hand down from generation to generation. I also love the service. Everyone there is so friendly and nice. I look forward to going back. I hope they never close down Monagos is is the best.

Nostalgia! This place just speaks like we’re eating back in the old days and a home cooked meal is all we needed for dinner. I had the hamburger steak with gravy and onions. The hamburger had a crust that you could tell came from a cooktop that’s been seasoned for years. It was moist and tasty. The teriyaki beef was the type you’d get at the old saimin stand. Finally, the pork chop. Chewy, tasty, moist…smothered in gravy. If you want a home cooked meal done right, swing by Manago.

Food & drinks: We stopped here for lunch on a Thursday in August 2024. They are famous for the pork chops and we ordered them with onions and gravy. The entrees came with sides and white rice. My wife and I really enjoyed the potato salad (with pasta mixed in) and bean sprout salad. The service was quick and friendly and the restaurant has an amazing view. It is located in an out of the way location but well worth the drive! They have also won a James beard award for their food.

The restaurant is a must stop for us even when we stay on the other side of the island. Pork chop, butterfish and Ono are all so tasty. The homey flavors and preparations are a trip down the memory lane (even for someone who never tried those flavors from bygone days) Well worth a detour from the usual tourist traps. It doesn’t hurt that the drive is scenic all the way from Kona town.
