My husband and I came for a coffee tour during our visit to Hawaii and agreed that this was one of the highlights of the trip! After a long and winding road up the hill through several fields of coffee trees, we arrived at Rooster Farms and were warmly greeted by Ed, the owner and “professional weed whacker” of the farm. While brewing freshly ground coffee for us to sample, he taught us about what makes Kona coffee so unique (and so good!) as well as sharing how he and his family ended up owning a 6 acre coffee farm. So friendly, and the coffee was SO GOOD. We walked around a bit after tasting the coffee and bought a bag of coffee beans to take home. We would highly recommend touring this farm! The process to make a reservation online was very easy and we received a text message the day of with instructions for navigating there. In short, every detail was carefully planned to give us the best possible experience.
Very good coffee and a neat behind the scenes
Owner is great. He explained their process and the history of coffee growing in the area. We enjoyed both the medium & dark roasts. Beautiful area. We took a lovely walk around the property after the tasting.
Well worth the trip off the beaten path to meet Ed and hear his story. Loved the tasting and brought home 3 bags of beans to share.
Don’t follow the herd, be different and seek out Rooster Farms!
If you want to have a personal experience with a coffee farm and owner you should definitely make time to check out Roosters Farm! It was truly a pleasure to meet the owner and his daughter this morning! He is very knowledgeable about his farm and the coffee was fantastic! We were invited to take a self guided tour of his farm and saw some trees that were 150 years old. The coffee tasting was very enjoyable and we walked away with 3 bags of coffee that we may or may not share with our family 😉
My fiance and I scheduled a pour over session with Ed and loved it. It was so unique. We walk in to see his pour over setup in the middle of a patio taken over by nature. It felt so Hawaii. While making coffee for us Ed was sharing how they run their farm and what makes Kona coffee special. We chatted over some of the best coffee and then he let us walk around to tour his farm. The road there was a little rough for our Prius so I would recommend taking a 4x4 vehicle if you head up, but its definitely worth the trip. If you're going on a coffee farm tour you need to add this one to your list.
Definitely a unique experience. This isn’t a tour, but rather an opportunity for you to taste a medium and hot brewed coffee on the farm.
The road to get there is long, and is quite rough. The owner was kind and texted us with detailed directions.
If you are interested in trying an off the beaten path, very small business cup of coffee (with the intention of purchasing a bag. $40 a bag, $100 for three), then check it out.
Ed offered a genuine, accurate farming experience. It was not coated with artificial reality but highly recommended for both the quality of coffee and seeing farming in Kona. The ride in is also beautiful. Would recommend.
Such a great experience. Very knowledgeable and awesome coffee. I was pleasantly surprised I liked the dark roast best! A fun adventure to find this place tucked away. Very beautiful area. Can't wait to drink the coffee I purchased at home! Thanks so much for your time Ed. Mahalo!
We loved this coffee farm and tasting! We booked super last minute and the owner was incredibly accommodating and gave us a personal coffee tasting and education about the Kona coffee area! You can walk and see the farm on your own. Would absolutely recommend!
Restaurantji Recommends
Had a great tasting experience with Ed at Rooster Farms. We sampled four different roasts and got to see the farm which is pretty high up on the mountain. Definitely recommend if you want to be immersed in the Kona experience. And the coffee tasted great :)
I don't leave reviews often, but decided to leave one for Rooster Farms Coffee after reading all the one-star reviews. First and most important, the Kona coffee is really great and much much cheaper compared to Kona coffee sold by most retailers. We had a hard time finding the place because GPS took us to a wrong road. The owner was very responsive on the phone. This is not a fancy/cozy cafe if that's what you are looking for. But the coffee is definitely worth the drive. I bought three bags for myself and ordered a monthly subscription for my boyfriend living on mainland. It's the best Kona coffee I have so far
As authentic as it gets!
We came to rooster farms based on a recommendation, not sure what to expect. We were hoping for a unique experience off the beaten path, and that was exactly what we found. Amazing. We didn’t know you had to reserve a tour, but Ed and his wife were very accommodating and Ed gave us an impromptu free coffee tasting. This is a 6 acre family run coffee farm. Ed gave us each a sample of their coffee, and it was delicious. We bought a bag of fresh whole bean from Rooster Farms when we were done. Ed shared facts about the coffee in the area while brewing the fresh cup of coffee. Our family made a memory here and would highly recommend to others. Don’t let the road deter you! It’s one way and says private property all the way up, but we made it up just fine. It would definitely be a good idea to make reservations to guarantee your coffee tasting/tour.
Been on the islands for the past 2 weeks and this is by far the best coffee I've had on both Maui and Big Island combined. Ed is chill. Be sure to stop by and support an awesome local producer!
