Rarely do I go to the same restaurant more than once during a vacation. There are just too many good options generally available especially in a place like Hawaii island with such a variety of fresh fish and inventive chefs. But Sushi Sam is an exception. We've gone twice during each of our last two visits. Their menu isn't expansive like some sushi restaurants whose menus are bursting with inventive rolls dominated by gloppy sauces. But the items they feature have delicious rice and feature the freshest fish you'll find anywhere. My wife who never eats sashimi was devouring the display so quickly I couldn't help but admire her chopstick proficiency. The Hamachi appetizer with serrano is a winner. Sapporo on tap! Service is professional and efficient. Reservations required. Highly recommended.

Truly authentic Japanese sushi experience! Don’t come here expecting American-style sushi loaded with cream cheese, this place offers something far more unique and traditional. It’s a hidden gem for those seeking a genuine taste of Japan. I only visit with our elderly Japanese friend who’s been coming here for years. She loves chatting with the staff in her native language, and through her, I’ve had the chance to try authentic Japanese dishes I’ve never seen anywhere else on the island. A special place for those who appreciate real Japanese cuisine.

Best meal we had our whole week staying in Kona, so we went twice. Fresh, delicious flavors, clean & classy environment. We especially loved the Signature roll, baked scallop nigiri, wagyu potstickers, and super California roll. All fantastic.
My partner and I have tried a number of sushi spots on the island and this was our favorite! Every nigiri and roll we tried was delicious, but the best was the negitoro (fatty tuna), which was phenomenal. If you’re a sushi lover, this place is definitely worth a visit.

We heard about this place in social media...which remains ironic because the owner (a expat surfer from Osaka) mentioned that he MIGHT update his social media every few months. I chose it but remained skeptical, as most influencers lack taste and understanding of what makes good and honest fare.
My wife hails from Japan and she enjoyed being able to speak her native tongue with the owner and staff. We stayed about 2 hours enjoying the various delights: sake, clam soup, hamachi and amaebi sashimi, nigiri, tempura, and gyoza. Honest food prepared meticulously with the best ingredients coupled with a delightfully kind and friendly staff made this rank among the highlights of our visit to Kona. I asked my wife how this place might fare in Japan, and she admitted that for our tastes and style, she enjoyed herself better than most in Japan because she felt less restrained by dogma and tradition. Sushi Sam's became the perfect end cap to our vacation.

This is one of the best Sushi restaurants I've been to in a long time. The seafood was so fresh that I've gone twice now. I'm looking forward to another visit before we leave. The staff are just wonderful, it was my pleasure to spend some time talking to the hostess and the waiter. Parking is easy something hard to come by in Kona.
