We have come here for breakfast buffet (orchid court) & dinner (Binchotan) during our stay and the service is unfortunately subpar.

The tables are filthy, food stains on wicker and bird droppings on the seat backs & cushions. Ants crawling all over them too. We had to ask to be re-seated twice due to gross tables.

The servers seem so over it with the guests coming in. They work, but haven’t been trained to provide an exceptional experience.

For breakfast, the egg line has mean hangry customers, the man cooking the egg has a tough job.

For dinner, my main complaint was no one explained what we were eating. They gave us green bread with butter when we noticed other tables had it, but we didn’t. I asked why the bread was green, green tea and the butter was sweet because they add honey to it. There was something on the edamame the kids got with their meal- only after I asked did they reveal it had yuzu butter on it. My kids like food they know and in this case, they did not like the flavor of the extra unknown taste to them. My chicken curry was very good. Presentation was beautiful and the food was unique and tasty. My husband got the ribeye and it came with a whole plate of broccolini & croquette which made it worth the cost. My daughter’s kid’s udon noodles were sad. They were $14 for something that could be made at home for $2. I felt my daughter’s bento dinner was nice because it came with edamame, fruit & rice- but the meat portion was unsubstantial.

I get the vibe that the servers are all just over it. I get the sense they don’t get paid enough and just deal with privileged mean people all day long. It must be a hard job.

They changed the menu and the options are much more limited. The old menu was way better and more fun. Quality and taste of food was not good. Also, way over priced.

So disappointed- used to be one of my favorite places to eat on the Big Island. Used to have people waiting to get a table. Now most tables were empty. The once unique and flavorful dining experience has gone downhill. Menu has been reduced to nothing special items and lacking flavor. The Hot Rock share plate of American Wagyu Beef, Shiso Chimichurri, Ginger was bland - no marinade or sauce just chili crisp (not chimichurri), slices of pickled ginger and a weak tempura sauce. The Big Island Roll of Shrimp Tempura, Ono, Avocado, Furikake Crunch, Cracked Pepper Aioli was bland- furikake crunch was more like tempura crumbs. Rushed through service to clear the table of food probably due to the incessant flies around the table. House special sangria was delicious but that's not enough for me to keep this restaurant in rotation and sadly can no longer recommend.

TLDR good for nice dinner in a pinch but there are other better options on this side of the island.

Takoyaki were OK, lacked flavor a bit and not as much octopus in them.

Volcano Roll delicious. Bincho Roll also very good, and would order again but not the best Waygu I had in the area (CanoeHouse Waygu Tataki was 2x better).

Sashimi Set high quality fish.

Grilled Kanpachi SO good, I went back and ordered it again. The fish itself is so soft and moist. The mushrooms add incredible flavor and texture. A little pricey (~$60) for the portion but not unheard of for the area/hotel.

Atmosphere was just weird....super empty. No one inside either time we went around 7/8pm. Outside was quiet and we ended up being one of the only people out there.

Great food and ambience However very expensive Server evidently brand new and was not knowledgeable Would have thought a restaurant of this level would have done better orientation

The property is beautiful and the staff is lovely. It's possible I got the wrong thing by ordering the crispy red snapper. It needed a different sauce or some type of rice or something to make it into a well balanced dish. The fried rice was good and the crispy bao buns but for $100 the fish wasn't worth it. Thank you to the staff though!!!

Bincho tan used to be defined as one of the most unique and fun dining experiences in the island but unfortunately those days are over. With a complete overhaul of the menu things have really changed and not for the better. Gone are the unique yaki tori style dishes and the white coals (where the restaurant gets its name) and welcome the generic upscale fare. While the food itself is not bad in the slightest it isn't unique nor justifiable in its price. Furthermore, while the food has been completely redone the cocktails are the same which are lackluster at best. They did retain their phenomenal staff which is always a plus but between the needless change of the food for the worst and the not so stellar drinks I cannot in good conscience recommend the former hidden gem.

We had a wonderful dinner. Jimmy was excellent and helped us with a food sensitivity and finding great options on the menu. Our waters and our drinks were always full. A really great dinner out on the patio on a beautiful night. We had the Volcano roll and a grilled seafood dinner for 1 to share. I asked for an inspired Manhattan cocktail with Japanese whiskey and it did not disappoint.

A really disappointing experience and sad to see such a pitiful restaurant exist among this hotel. Ambiance nice but our server, Heather was flighty and clueless. Never checked on us (20 to 30 minute increments), didn't bring food out when it was ready and then laughed it off that it had been sitting there. No apology or sense anything eas amiss. Never even asked how the food was?
Worse then the service was the food. I've never had edamame without salt and el dente. Rolls weren't even marginal and considering this place is suffering on all aspects, I can only assume the management is too...

The wait staff were great, the food not so much. We were sick all night after eating here. We all had a bit of eachother dishes. No one finished their meal. Gotta be blunt since this place is $$$. We could have grilled and made better Udon ourselves and have had much better sushi rolls. Even if we hadn’t gotten food poisoning, this place is off our list for good. Looks good enough to eat but so disappointed to have gotten ill from eating it.

We went there for a birthday. Got there at 5:15. There was only one other table party of 10 that was sat. The host tried to sit us in the sun. We asked for an umbrella that sat right next to the table to be opened. We were told that’s not allowed. We asked to sit in an empty shaded table. We were told that was reserved. We were sat in the bar area with our toddler. We were also sat next to the very loud 10 top. When the whole restaurant was empty. We ordered the grill your own. We weren’t told that it was gonna be already cooked. The grill plate was extremely over cooked and bland. When we cashed out there was only one other table sat. This restaurant is beautiful and has a lot of potential but it was a huge disappointment.

I wish I could give this place negative stars. My friend ordered sushi that was mushy. I got the Mahi Mahi dish. It was just a sad, badly overcooked piece of fish on white rice. There was a tiny bit of sauce. It was dry as the desert. Our server was sweet, but clearly very green.
Please don’t go spend all your money on this terrible food, you will regret it.

We arrived 1 minute before closing time at 9 pm and they seated us and served us without rushing us out the door. Vegan options are udon (soup), fried rice, veg sushi, a tofu side with a very spicy topping, and a couple of others we didn’t try. We also had a delicious vegan asparagus side with some sort of aioli. The portions were large enough for two. I didn’t take any photos of the food since we were ravenously hungry after stargazing at Mauna Kea. They also have a vegan panna cotta on the menu for dessert.

We ordered grilled food for the table - it arrived already cooked and completely cold. It was the most awful experience of our entire stay
