I wanted to like this place, I was really disappointed. Over the 5 years of living in Des Moines, Iowa we had always passed by the Flying Mango and wanted to try it.
I ordered the Brisket, and goat cheese and chicken rice, nothing had any flavor, I mostly had fat on one of my briskets, I used bbq sauce on everything to elevate the dishes.
The atmosphere was great, the art on the wall was cool.
Flying mango needs to step it up.

So I took my wife here for valentine's day. We were greated when arriving and the staff were very polite. We arrive at 7:50 for our 8p reservation and were seated by 8:00pm. The waitress was amazing very sweat amd attentive. But the food was opposite of the service. First we ordered cherry cokes and they were extremely to sweet as they had a cherry extract. I ordered the rib and brisket plate with a side of red beans and rice and mashed potatoes. The potatoes were good but the red beans and rice was not. The rice and beans were undercooked. The ribs were over cooked as well and lacked seasoning. The brisket was cooked properly and was extremely tender but lacked overall flavor. My wife ordered the chicken combo and let me tell you the chicken tasted like you put a raw chicken into an electric smoker. There was absolutely no flavor at all. Overall the service was amazing but the quality of the food was not. I watched this on DDD prior to coming in and let me tell you the food look absolutely nothing like I saw on DDD. Let's just say I don't plan on returning anytime soon.

The food was great! I had the redneck surf and turf with an extra side of shrimp and the goat cheese grits and the NA ginger mango drink. The ribs were SLIGHTLY dry but that was taken care of with a little side of their excellent BBQ sauce. I've been in town for a few days and hadn't eaten anywhere to write home about until tonight 👍🏻👌🏻

Food took a long time to come out for a bbq place. Food looked great and smelled good, but I made that mistake ordering something I wouldn’t eat. I’m not a “ sauce of the day” person. Note to others … ask questions. The sides I did have were ok, nothing special. Amazing owner, sweet staff. Get a higher review because if how great the people are. That sometimes makes up for the lack of flavor.

The staff at the Flying Mango was just super friendly. The bbq pork is just the way i like like, not too saucy but some on the side just in case. Haven't eaten the dessert yet, but I'm pretty sure it'll be delicious... Heath bar bread pudding? Are you kidding me?

The food was amazing. Cat, our waitress made this dinner an experience. She cared about how we felt when we walked out. We will be returning for sure! Our table of 7 all had different items from the menu and everyone loved everything.

Stopped into Flying Mango as we were driving through Des Moines, and simply put: we will be back. Everything we had (from the catfish cake to the brisket to the Heath bread pudding) was immaculate. Not only were the portions generous, but the staff were also exceedingly generous hosts. Our waitress and the owner went out of their way to make sure we had the best possible experience. It truly felt like we were dining at a friend’s home. If you have the opportunity to stop by Flying Mango, do it, you will not be disappointed!

First time here, but won’t be last! Everything was great! Food, service was top notch! The owner, Mike, is the nicest guy. He walks around and checks in on the customers. He’s super interesting to talk to! Can’t wait to go back. Will be part of the dining rotation going forward!

We had the shrimp pontchatrain and the root beer and molasses braised pork.
The shrimp pontchatrain was to die for. Absolutely delicious, lick your plate clean good. The crispy garlic bread to go with it added a nice crunch to the dish as well.
The root beer and molasses braises pork was not good at all. Definitely would not recommend. I thought the root beer would add some sweetness but it just made the flavor really weird.
