Excellent food! Almost every dish myself or my partner/friends have tried has been excellent. Service is efficient and there’s plenty of seating. Popular place for a reason. I often get random cravings for their guacamole and homemade, fluffy chips!Vegan/plant based friendly, plenty of parking available.
The place was busy, and we thought it would be a wait for our food. It arrived quickly. The sandwich a turkey bacon club, was delicious. Fries were crispy.
The menu has an amazing variety. Really, something for everyone. I had loaded nachos and they're built on Gateway's tasty flour tortilla chips. My husband had the chicken club and fries. It was juicy and very tasty as well. We were there at about 1:45 on a Saturday and it was pretty busy. Things moved right along, however.
Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian and vegan options.
The food here is amazing! I got a French toast with syrup and berries and they play the best music in the building. It also has a built in marketplace and the kids menus are friendly. There's a freezer section for bottled drinks and the design is next level. Whether you wanna go eat or grocery shopping, this is the place for you. Much gives the airport vibes tbh which I love
Great Food Forgot My Sweet Potatoe Waffle But ? Ice cream & Marconi and Sandwich ? Was Amazing
Always love this market. Sometimes a bit pricey but I find myself checking things out and buying a lot of stuff here. Really miss those molasses cookies though!!! Had clam chowder here tonight of the hot bar and damn good!!!
Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian options and of course, organic.
Kid-friendliness: Always kid friendly.
Parking: Great location. Easy to get in & out!
Wheelchair accessibility: No problems.
The cafe must have made a lot of improvements in the last few years given old reviews. The service was very good. I had the House Ramen. It was very good. However, the broth needed a little something to brighten it up. Perhaps, a wee bit of rice vinegar. My husband had the eggs benedict. The price without addons was very good. The market was a bit pricey but it has a lot of hard to find good stuff, like clotted cream, duck breast, English canned beans, fresh figs, black pudding, rabbit etc... We wanted to try something new and were very pleased to find this cafe/market.
Probably the single nicest breakfast sandwich I've ever had! Ciabatta, real cheese, lettuce and tomato really elevate the traditional eggs-ham-bacon recipe. I'm grateful for the team opening early enough to start my road trip day so properly!
Good vegan options, clearly marked. The tofu banh mi was especially delicious. The vegetarian chili was filling and delicious. I like the variety of hot sauces they keep on hand. This is a great place to meet up with a group.
Tried the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. It was made with chicken strips that were all crunch and no meat. Decided to give them another try a couple weeks later. My black bean burger was cooked so long that the patty was black and hard. I’ll go to the market, but won’t be retuning to the cafe. Not a chance.

Love this place!! The food is varied and delicious from breakfast, to lunch, to dinner and vegan dishes too. They have a Kids menu, too. Great staff and very clean. While waiting for your food or after eating, browse or shop the "biggest little" grocery store with a fresh meat or fish counter that is beautiful. Its kind of interesting to see how much is in this Gateway Market. My goodness, the wine selection is uncanny, if you can't find the wine you want, they probably don't make it. Oh, and a bakery, too!! Outside patio. This place is a gem, take a look, have a bite. Enjoy!!
Traveling through the Midwest from North Carolina. Toured the Capitol Builing and the docent recommended Gateway for their sandwiches. Good amount of vegan choices for me to whch I was thankful. Large menu with varied options. Husband had the turkey deli sandwhich. He really liked it but found the mustard pretty spicy. I had the black bean burger with a side of vegan chili. The spice level was way too much. So much so that the flavor was lost on me. We found there was plenty of seating to be had and there's planty of parking. Now the market....WOW!!! We saw products we can't get at Wholefoods in our next of the woods. Bakery items looked delicious too. I do wish they had a few pets items as they had none at all. We were heading to the airport and love brining home a dog treats to our "kids".
Honestly everything on their menu is pretty tasty I’ve been eating here for quite a few years now. I highly recommend that everyone tries their onion rings. They are super crispy and the seasoning is unreal.
Luv luv luv this place! A great business in a wonderful neighborhood in the heart of Des Moines. Run, to Gateway Market as soon as possible! Their Raman soup is incredible. As is everything else, but I love their Raman. Great sushi selection also. That will be the next thing on the list for me.
The Food was very good and I was well pleased.
