Grumpy Goat Tavern - Des Moines

What on earth has happened to the Grumpy Goat? It used to be our favorite restaurant; in fact it was the first place we went when COVOD restrictions were lifted. However, our last two visits were abysmal. First we ordered the Nachos (my personal favorite). However, what came was a basket of cold, stale chips (that looked like they were dumped out of a bag) with a few random toppings scattered on top (the toppings were also cold & congealed). The server only came back to our table to bring the check. But the food had always been so good before so we thought this was a random occurrence. Sadly, we were wrong; our next visit was even worse. I ordered the brisket sandwich with the homemade chips. I took one bite of the sandwich & gagged. I removed the top bun of my sandwich and was horrified to see that instead of brisket, I had been served a sandwich comprised of mostly fat & gristle. It was disgusting and inedible. The chips were cold, stale, & burned. We had also ordered appetizers that never came. Our server had disappeared; we eventually saw him at the bar chatting with co-workers. He came over with the check and when I showed him my "sandwich", he asked if I wanted a box! Seriously??? He did ask then if we wanted it removed from the check. We also had to ask that the appetizer that never came be removed. These incidents were not at only one Grumpy Goat location; they happened in both Ankeny & West Des Moines. I am saddened by the fact that what was once a favorite hangout for my husband & I has gone so far downhill & COVID is no excuse. Even the thought of returning to the Grumpy Goat makes me nauseous.

We did not get to try the food, went in and found they charge a 4% surcharge for using a credit card or debit card. Will NEVER go back. Hamburgers and Sandwiches are $17 and they want to charge extra.

My fiancé and I came here for a drink. Not only was the staff rude she allowed the patrons to be rude to us, too. Over charged us for our drinks that were advertised as being less. If you don’t play on the “straight” team I’d recommend you don’t patronize this place. I would rate as no stars if that was a option.

Will not eat at any grumpy goat restaurants until under new ownership. Assault with bodily injury. Wife beater

I like the atmosphere but considering the news lately, I won’t return.

Loved the seared Ahi Tuna Salad. Service was good. A beautiful day for the outdoor dining.

The owner is... Problematic. However, the food was good, service was superb.

Amazing place. We were looking for a place to bring our 4 month puppy. The waitress automatically brought out water for him and was very friendly, courteous and welcoming to us. The food was fast and wonderful. I will definitely come back here if ever I'm in Iowa again.

Once was enough for us. If I could I would give a 0 rating. We hold strongly to supporting local businesses however we can not support this particular bar and grill. Luckily there are enough local businesses that value customers with a clean establishment, decent customer service and excellent food.

Came here to kill time before reservations to the brewery. The bartender we had was amazing. He was so funny and attentive. Made me feel like I was having drinks with my family. I will definitely be back if I'm in that area.

Really nice server. Terrible pizza, tastes like frozen pizza with cheese added and it was undercooked. Wings would have been good except for the gelatinous sauce.

This was my first experience here. And the Bloody Mary’s are AMAZING! bartenders Sinahi and Gino are awesome and so much funnn!!! They took great care of us! Highly recommend. Will definitely be coming back.

Bloody Mary’s are amazing!!! They are so freaking good, I had the original and the dill!! Both my bartenders were soo good and on top of it!! Sinahi and Gino are the BEST!! Me and my friend will be back for sure! No doubt about it!
