Visited a few months back and noticed that some of their most popular dishes tasted different. Came back today and was told that they had new owners. They have totally changed the flavors that everyone has known and loved…..and not in a good way. They had the best Empress chicken and crab Rangoon‘s hands down and now it’s just not good… super disappointing...

Ordered at counter for carry out. She seemed overwhelmed . Two people waiting fir orders one picking up and myself. First noticed new owners maybe? Prices have gone up maybe $2. Plus! Got food quickly. Food had little flavor. Egg rolls were plain with no flavor as well. I liked that there were veggies , cabbage, onions in lo mein but no flavor to them.

Will think before spending $12 for lunch with little taste to it. Do NOT like even before had any service ir food when I paid first thing it asked was for the tip amount! I tip on service and food . She only took my order so far so no tip to base anything on. If you want a deserving tip then you must provide service and then good food first

I went here foe the first time. The lady taking orders was not very friendly. I didn't know they only had one kind of soup depending on the day. She was not very helpful. Then she was yelling and arguing with the cook.

We have been going to Shang Yuen for years. But in the last year something has changed. The Chicken Fried Rice is not the same as it used to be. The flavor has changed and the Crab Ragoo is not the same. Also the vegetable meal has a coating on it that is left to be desired. Probably won't be back. Very disappointed!

I've been coming to this place since I was a kid. Almost 35 years. We moved out east and always look forward to having this for summer visits BUT what happened to this place?!? Everything is different down to the crab rangoon and rice! Sad, we feel like the joint is a good as closed now.

Sad edit. The last few times we’ve ordered here the food is just not good. Overly salty, not fresh, just bad. Tried getting a refund and it wouldn’t let us. I’ll change my review when they hike up their food quality.

We just love this place and we order a lot of Chinese food. The orange chicken, the tofu, the rice- it’s all the best we have in Des Moines

My family has gone to this restaurant since it was located across the street, many many years ago. It has always been our favorite Chinese food. The family, who owned the place, was never very friendly but the food was fresh, delicious, and consistent. It was sold a few years ago and although the new counter staff is more friendly, the food has gone downhill considerably. It's greasy, inconsistent, ingredients have changed but not for the better. The last few times I ate there, I regretted it and so did my digestive system. The rest of my family agrees and we are so sad that our favorite for around 30 years is not not the quality it used to be

Take out from Shang Yuen is good. I like the mushroom beef, my wife likes the chicken with vegetables, and my son likes the General Tso's Chicken. The portions are large so we always have leftovers.

Food was quick and reasonably priced. Mongolian beef was on the sweet side, not spicy. Would order again. From order to walking out the door with my food was 6 mins.

Ordered lunch online and picked up in ~15 minutes. Food was warm and serving sizes are generous. Lunch special comes with your entree of choice, fried rice, a crab rangoon, and egg roll. Unfortunately, the egg roll was cooked well on the outside but undercooked on the inside and was also very oily.
