I have been going to South Union since it was by the YWCA (when we would eat bread scraps by the bag full). Favorite spot, always bring people here who are visiting, make a point to have lunch every time I'm down town. BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BREAD?! The last couple of times I've been I've assumed it was an off day or there was an issue with the bake, but it seems that the beautiful, pillowy, soft garlic focaccia is now flat, dry and minimally garlicky. I know the bread still exists (I just go get it at Gateway now), but I can't believe that they switched the recipe or whatever they did. The meat/cheese is still great quality, but the bread is a total miss and makes it hard to consider it as a lunch option any more. Just be warned this is not the South Union so many of us knew and loved :(

The Cali Club was fantastic. Visited from out of town, and will be dreaming about that sandwich until I can visit again. Staff was also friendly and service was quick. But that sandwich was life altering.

Traveling to all 50 states and stopped in this South Union Bread Cafe for lunch since it had such positive reviews! The Sarah’s Revenge sandwich was the best sandwich I’ve ever had! I’m glad she got mad at whomever or whatever! That was a damn good Sammie! And the pepper jack soup was amazing! If I was ever in prison on DR, I’d request that sandwich as my last meal!!!!! Sad I don’t live closer to eat here again!

Love the new look. The food was delicious and fast. Just a little on the pricey side.

First time visitor today. The place was cute, but I have never experienced such appalling and and naive customer service. When I requested a Turkey and provolone, I was hit with, in a most aggressive tone, “we don’t have that”. I was confused initially as it was on the menu, so I inquired further as the aforementioned statement insinuates the establishment does not carry provalone. The server responded very snappily and with a raised voice, “I know. We don’t have it!” My family and I exited the premise following, as I will not support such treatment over something so simple. Customer service 101 would suggest a response similar to, “I’m sorry, we are out of provalone today.”

Best sandwich in downtown, probably in all of Des Moines metro. I don't know who Sarah was or why she wanted revenge, but the "Sarah's Revenge" is my favorite sandwich.
