Great local coffee. Vanilla oak milk latte was amazing.

Top notch coffee and atmosphere. Above all treat all customers with respect and offer a safe space for community to gather and work. Definitely will be back!

This is the best coffee shop I’ve ever been to and it’s not even about the coffee (which is great, by the way). It’s about the vibes. It is a warm hug when you feel lost and hopeless, a chance to reconnect with old (or new) friends, a place to unwind and recharge. I wish every town had a place like The Slow Down— we would be better, kinder, more thoughtful humans.

And don’t even get me started on the owners, Kara and Drew. They are what every community needs in small business owners— consistently advocating for their neighbors, offering up hope and a space for folks to connect and seek safety.

So do yourselves a favor, go to The Slow Down. You won’t be sorry.

The Slow Down and the work that Drew does to advocate for the Highland and Oak Park neighborhoods is bringing life back to the north side of Des Moines. This is a great place to study, meet or work. They partner with other local small businesses (be sure to check out the cinnamon rolls) and host events/gatherings for the community. This is one of my most recommended places in the area.

Barista was knowledgeable and had great recommendations. Drink was delicious and not overly sweet; pastries looked appetizing. Plenty of tables and easy to converse (not too loud)

I met an acquaintance for coffee, did not purchase food. There is a drink latte/coffee/hor chocolate menu. I had drip coffee which was good. Pleasant place to enjoy a coffee, meet with friends or work. There is an assortment of games and books available for patrons.

I got a Hot Mocha and the bill was $7 for 8 OZ... the casher could have been an automated screen. took a long time for mediocre expensive coffee. ill try this spot again to see if i change my mind, but so far everytime i think about this place i think about how bad it was.

I moved to Des Moines from Nebraska and I was homesick for my favorite coffee hangout. The Slow Down is honestly even more cozy, inviting and has a warmer vibe, I love it.

Always very welcoming, especially the owners, Drew and Anna! Their coffee tastes very clean compared to Starbucks and Dunkin! They have an awesome punchcard loyalty program and welcome diverse populations from everywhere without judging them! They are all very kind!
