Spillway Reviews
nice little bar restaurant very friendly staff cold drinks and awesome food. thumbs up on the best patty melt around
Stopped in the Spillway recently when my husband and I were in the area. Pizza was excellent & reasonably priced! Saw someone having a tenderloin that looked equally great… that will be the next stop!
The food always hot, fresh and delicious. If you have never ate there you need to.

The Spillway is a charming restaurant and bar located in the small historic town of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, nestled along the Mississippi River. This unassuming establishment has earned a reputation for serving some of the best pork tenderloin sandwiches in the state, with customers raving about their tender, flavorful, and perfectly crispy breaded version. The atmosphere is described as "magnificent," with a dimly lit tavern vibe that exudes rural authenticity, featuring over 25 trophy buck deer head mounts on the walls.
While the dining room is more functional than fancy, it offers a comfortable setting to enjoy not only the renowned tenderloin sandwiches but also a variety of burgers and a highly acclaimed thin-crust pizza. Recent visitors appreciated the good prices, noting that the pizza is a Chicago-inspired thin crust that is hard to beat. The menu also includes delicious appetizers, and the fried chicken is considered top shelf. Customers praise the friendly and attentive staff, with service that is quick and courteous, even during busy events like Hawkeye football Saturdays.
The Spillway's value is highlighted by affordable $1.50 PBR long necks and generous portions that leave diners satisfied. Recent reviews mention enjoyable breakfast experiences, which were good and reasonably priced, and a fun Taco Tuesday where loaded nachos and deep-fried tacos, surrounded by Doritos-style chips, were enjoyed. The owner was helpful in providing gluten-free options.
With walls decorated with deer mounts and a menu full of delicious food, the Spillway is full of character. It is a great place to enjoy cold drinks, hot food, and excellent service, making it a must-visit spot any time of year for anyone exploring the charming small-town offerings of Northeast Iowa.
