I have yet to visit the bakery but I purchase their very tasty Dutch Letters from one of my local Casey's. Yum!

We were stopping through Pella on a cross country road trip and was told we needed to stop in and try their pastries. Let me just tell you, THE BEST PASTRIES IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. Not only was absolutely everything we got incredible, the prices were FANTASTIC. I don't know if it's because we live in a very expensive part of the country but the quality for the price we paid for everything was unbeatable.

Currently dreaming of the things we got and trying to figure out how I can get the cookie dough brownie and strawberry fruit puff pastry shipped to me in Rhode Island!

Their almond bars were so good!!! I wish I had gotten another one. The person behind the counter was helpful as it was our first time and she helped us pick unique options.

Almond Marzipan Heaven! I was walking through the Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market, and saw these pastries in the shape of an S called a Dutch Letter. I am so glad I asked about them. I was told they had almonds inside, so I had to give it a try.

My goodness was this the best thing ever. It was filled with a sticky marzipan and was absolutely delicious!!! Better than any croissant I’ve found.

My very kind neighbors brought me some of your Dutch letters recently when one of my pets passed away. I'd never had Dutch letters before but they were absolutely delicious! Thank you for your part in helping make life a little easier.

This was a great bakery. They had a good variety of various pastries, all freshly made. Our cheddar jalapeño sausage kolaches were recently made before ordering them and were delicious. Just the right amount of spice with a rather light bread surrounding the meat. From the local Dutch letters to filled croissants, fried fruit pies and cannolis, there were plenty of options to choose from.I was very satisfied with my apple cinnamon scone. Something light, fluffy, and flavorful.Between the excellent pastries and friendly service, I will definitely visit this bakery again when I have the chance.

Vegetarian options: As this bakery only had a few items with meat in them, most options are fine for vegetarians.

Parking: Parking was tough to find with how busy it was.

Great pastries, fair to cheap pricing, & friendly service.I was nervous it wouldn’t be good since the line was shorter than the more reputable bakery nearby. So glad we choose Vander Ploeg! I’m still thinking about the tasty pastries a week later!Only critique would be the lemon blueberry bread was dry and underwhelming.Vander Ploeg is a gift to Pella!

Best Dutch letters in town. Everything is fresh and delicious, unlike the other bakery. I bought Dutch letters from both Vander Ploegs and Jaarsma. Vander Ploegs came out WAY ahead: fresh and flaky vs. stale, and the filling is more almond-y plus they just look nicer with their slightly different shape and sparkling sugar.Their white walnut bars were plumper and fresher as well. Have decorated sugar cookies, a nice selection of bars, muffins and pastries. The shop has been remodeled and it's really beautiful and clean. There are even stools by the window to sit and eat your pastry.

I like coming here for their Dutch Apple bread, donuts and desert rolls. Nice that you can take a seat inside and enjoy your pastry, and usually less busy than the other bakery.
