I bought 3 Loaves of Bread at the Farmers Market today. 9/20/2025.
I bought 2 Lemon Blueberry and Strawberry Rhubarb.
I must not understand how they do their breads , but it was not what I expected!
On top of that it has absolutely NO FLAVOR!
I was embarrassed in front of my company and I thew $24 out the window.
All 3 Loaves went in the trash!
The Ladies get an A and the Bread gets on F !

I love this bakery. They have Dutch Letters (a pastry filled with almond paste - delicious! ), beautifully decorated & yummy sugar cookies, donuts, different types of sweet rolls, scones, creme horns, coffee cakes... so many goodies! The employees are so friendly.

I have tried the other bakery a few doors down and I was VERY happy I did!! I had went to the other bakery the last two times and thought it was awful. I decided to give Vander Ploeg a try. What a marvelous difference! Everything was so fresh!! Like it just came out of oven. Dough was tender not hard and dried out like other place. I will Definitely be back next time in town! I just finished a loaf of apple bread that I bought 4 days ago and it still as good as day I bought!! GOOD JOB to the bakers and owners Thank You!!

Make sure to ask what is fresh. Since this is a small bakery they don't have a lot of things cooking at once. We got a Dutch letter, a cherry donut home, a butter pecan sweet bun and a chocolate Bismarck and a strawberry rhubarb bread. The letter was delicious and the ends are caramelized for a crunchy sweetness. The cherry donut hole, was like a glazed bready maraschino cherry. The Bismarck had a cream that was like boiled frosting (marshmallow texture with a frosting taste). The let down was the sweet bun, but they did warn me that it had been sitting out for a while. The bread was probably the worst strawberry rhubarb pie I've ever had, but then again it was bread with small tastes of pie throughout which is kinda interesting.

We were stopping through Pella on a cross country road trip and was told we needed to stop in and try their pastries. Let me just tell you, THE BEST PASTRIES IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. Not only was absolutely everything we got incredible, the prices were FANTASTIC. I don't know if it's because we live in a very expensive part of the country but the quality for the price we paid for everything was unbeatable.

Currently dreaming of the things we got and trying to figure out how I can get the cookie dough brownie and strawberry fruit puff pastry shipped to me in Rhode Island!

Their almond bars were so good!!! I wish I had gotten another one. The person behind the counter was helpful as it was our first time and she helped us pick unique options.

Almond Marzipan Heaven! I was walking through the Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market, and saw these pastries in the shape of an S called a Dutch Letter. I am so glad I asked about them. I was told they had almonds inside, so I had to give it a try.

My goodness was this the best thing ever. It was filled with a sticky marzipan and was absolutely delicious!!! Better than any croissant I’ve found.
