We first visited Cranky Hanks a year ago and have been back countless times since. It’s a great atmosphere with an owner who treats you like family ever.single.time. The pizza is the absolute best in the Cedar Rapids corridor and worth the short drive to Shellsburg. And the cheesecake… just do yourself a favor and order it. You won’t be disappointed.

Cranky Hank's Pizza Bank is a true hidden treasure in Shellsburg, Iowa. From the moment I stepped into the cozy, converted bank building, I was welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality—the kind that makes you feel like you've been coming here for years.
The pizza? Absolutely incredible. Their creativity shines through in every menu item, especially with offerings like the Cheeseburger, Love of Greece and the Silent Alarm and add in the fact that the dough is made in-house? You can truly taste the difference.
I was thrilled to end on a sweet note with their scratch-made cheesecake. It was rich yet wonderfully light, the perfect way to round out an already fantastic experience.
Beyond the food, there's something special about the story behind Cranky Hank's—its dedication to family, its charming atmosphere, and its commitment to quality. It's no wonder people say it's worth the drive, and I wholeheartedly agree. This is the kind of place you want to come back to again and again. Can't wait for my next visit!

I drove here from Sigourney Iowa to meet my sister for her bday dinner and I would drive that far again to eat here since we all liked it. If you’re thinking about stopping in do it! Decided to take a little drive tonight to try Cranky Hank's Pizza Bank for the first time. It was amazing!! The pizza, service AND the cheesecake were all excellent! The owner was fun to visit with too, and had a great sense of humor! We will definitely be back! 10/10!

We’ve been craving Cranky Hanks pizza ever since we heard they opened in Shellsburg. We used to go every week to their Lindale mall location just for Hank bread. Well, they totally lived up to our expectations! As soon as we stepped inside, our son couldn’t stop talking about the amazing smell that instantly brought back memories. The Hank bread, meat lovers, and belly acher pizzas were all incredible, and the service was top-notch. We were greeted warmly and the entire staff was super friendly. The owner even came over to check on us and offered to try their homemade cheesecake - it was heavenly! It’s so refreshing to have a non-chain, small-town pizza place that’s so friendly and welcoming. It’s definitely worth the drive!

I hesitate to even write this, because y’all are gonna go make the place so busy the rest of us won’t get any pizza, but RUN do not walk to Cranky Hank’s Pizza Bank! We went on a whim tonight (my other half was craving the Chicken Bacon Ranch Potato). I had never been. We will be back. FREQUENTLY. Here are all the things we can’t say enough good things about… 1. The FOOD. Everything we ate was delicious. We started with the Hank Bread (cheese bread). Delicious. The marinara they serve with it is delicious. Then we ordered the aforementioned CBRP, and a Silent Alarm (which is their take on a jalapeño popper). In the advice of the owner we ordered dessert- peanut butter cup cheesecake- something we rarely do and definitely didn’t need, but absolutely don’t regret. It was perfection. Perfectly creamy. Flavor throughout. Amazing crust. Then, as though we had left anything on the menu, we ordered their Crab Rangoon Pasta to-go to reheat for lunch tomorrow. The crust on their pizza is really delicious. The outside is wonderfully crisp, and ideally chewy on the inside. Has an excellent flavor, and stands up to ALL the toppings they put on!! 2. The SERVICE! Every single staff person there tonight was absolutely so kind, so welcoming, so accommodating, so helpful. The owner came over and talked to us for a bit- so friendly. Our server was as sweet as can be. It’s obvious that folks feel welcomed here- as I type this, there is not one empty seat! 3. The Atmosphere! This place is clean, easily accessible, comfortable, not too loud, plenty of TVs- everything!
All of this to say, GO to Cranky Hank’s Pizza Bank! You will NOT be disappointed!!

Our meal began with the Wisconsin White Cheddar Cheese Curds, fried to perfection with a crispy, seasoned breading encasing gooey cheese that kept us reaching for more until the basket was regrettably empty.
The Jalapeño Mac & Cheese Bites featured a delicate, crispy exterior and a creamy interior with a pleasant kick from the jalapeños. Paired with a Thai sweet chili sauce, they offered a surprising and delightful combination.
The Garlic Chicken Pizza, with its simple yet flavorful ingredients, stood out. The impressive cheese pull and crust reminiscent of garlic bread elevated the experience.
The Silent Alarm Pizza delivered the perfect amount of spice, thanks to a generous helping of jalapeños, complemented by cream cheese, bacon, and crumbled sausage. The harmonious blend of smokey flavors and creaminess was fantastic.
For dessert, the Raspberry Chocolate Cheesecake was exceptional, ranking among the best we’ve ever had. It was so delightful that I’ve decided to forgo a traditional birthday cake in favor of ordering this cheesecake for my upcoming 34th - I can hardly wait!
