We stop at the Royal Cafe everytime we go to Ames. This restaurant is a family run business that serves homemade food with a smile. We need to support businesses like this who work so hard at providing quality and tasty meals and desserts at a very reasonable price.
If you have a need for good old fashioned home cooking this may be a good choice. The chicken noodle soup off the lunch buffet was just right to make me feel all better. The other offerings looked fresh enough and my hunch is Grandma put that banana bread out. Never mind the dated decor and plastic flowers, the food is good enough to make Happy Chef proud. Keep heading for Des Moines if you want fancy.
Locally owned, which I like and the staff was very friendly. We stopped while traveling and so glad we did. We'll definitely be coming back when on the road. The food was good, down home neighborhood restaurant feel, and prices were very reasonable. I highly recommend.
