Woke up late and wanted to have a late lunch, come here thinking I could enjoy a quick late lunch with my other half. We ordered some cheese bites, a Philly cheesesteak and a pastrami sandwich with a Pepsi each. The bill ends up being 67 dollars………I can deal with the sandwiches being 17.50 each and the pop being 2.50…….but an appetizer of some cheese bites BEING PRICED AT 17.50 AS WELL!!!!????????What in the world is that!? Since when did an appetizer such as cheese bites get to be so expensive!!???? It’s seriously ridiculous…….last time I come that’s for sure.
For a bar and grill it was actually very good food and beverages. It is typical sports bar but we stopped in for lunch and my husband had a reuben and I had almond crusted chicken strips they were delicious and the drinks we had were very good.
Terrible pizza, tastes like they picked it up from the frozen pizza section at the grocery store. Vibe was alright inside, just a lot of flies around. Also terrible that they have a credit card fee, it's like they are trying to scare away customers.
They serve breakfast daily until 2pm, which was a pleasant surprise. Our server was friendly and prompt. The pancakes were fluffy and very tasty. They are served with cinnamon butter. Yum!
We were here at 7:15 and ordered right away 8:25 we FINALLY got our food. Not sure if the owner is the old man that doesn't do anything but that's probably why it operates the way it does. Absolutely the worst experience I have had at a restaurant. I live in. Very small town and have seen our restaurants more packed and never there for more than an hour!
The food was good. The server was great! Never had to ask her for anything. BUT the woman’s bathroom was absolutely disgusting. Floors looked they hadn’t been mopped in weeks. While sitting in the stall the plastic cover to the toilet paper kept falling down into my lap. I tried washing my hands, put soap on them, tried to turn on the faucet and to my surprise no water came out. Moved over to the second faucet same thing.. and just my luck No paper towels. Very disappointing.A restaurant can have good food and great service BUT if the bathrooms are as gross as these you won’t get a high rating from me.
Went here around 7:30 for a late dinner with my boyfriend a few days ago. There was a short wait - and not because it was busy, because no one even looked at the host stand for about 10 minutes. Us and another group were about to leave just as they finally seated us.Sat down, were not greeted by a server for at least 10 more minutes so we got up and left.Looking at the menu prices for just chips and salsa we were not about to pay the prices they list. We’d been there before and the food is always subpar, hit or miss. Better food and service at other local DSM establishments. Would have had a better experience at B Bops across the street.
Food and drinks were really good! Highly recommend the chicken and waffles benny, shrimp and Gouda grits and dole whip mimosa. The only bad things were the bathrooms really need an update- stall doors need locks replaced, one faucet didn’t work, paper towel dispenser didn’t work, and the door made a terribly loud noise. The parking lot also needs the large and numerous pot holes fixed.
We really enjoy eating here when we are in town visiting. The menu has sooooo many good options. We love the environment with the indoor/ outdoor feel. The wait staff is friendly, attentive, and approachable. 10/10 Wish we had one in our town!
Great sports bar atmosphere. We ate there twice while in the area.Awesome fries, loved the philly flatbread and the pastrami! Good onion straws/rings. The taco and the burger (can't remember the name) were okay.Great server both times!

Easily one of the worst places to eat. The prices are very close to $20.00 per sandwich. I get that it is open concept with the walls but when its 85* and flies all over the place it makes for uncomfortable dining experience. We were constantly shooing flies off our plates and ended up not finishing anything and leaving. 3 people, 3 sandwiches and an appetizer and our bill was $98.00. Des Moines has much better options for that price point.
The hotel we are staying at recommended trying this out. Our server, Taryn, was super sweet and helpful. You have to try the totchos-super yummy! Hubby had the hazy ipa and said it was good. He also liked the root beer burger.
Everything was pretty okay - that’s the best I can say. Server checked on us frequently. Chicken wings are smoked and my husband loves them! My hot beef sandwich was tasty and the mashed potatoes okay. Gravy was tasteless.Prices have gone up($17.50 for appetizer chicken wings). With 2 drinks and a tip, we ended up with over $70 for a weekend lunch.
Great atmosphere in this place. The booths are nice and spacious, I'm a bigger guy and I had an excessive amount of room.Becky, our waitress, was astounding. Super friendly, fast, and attentive. The restaurant wasn't too busy when we were in, but she had a decent number of customers in her section to stay pretty busy, and she did a great job managing every table. But the best part of the whole experience was definitely my meal. I ordered the 'Philly Flatbread' with fries. The fries were delicious and some of the best around and I definitely recommend trying. But the 'Philly Flatbread'...Damn, this sandwich was ridiculously GOOD. I'm not exaggerating, this honestly was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Thank you to the cook/owner, this put The Grumpy Goat Tavern on my "top favorites" list of places to eat in Des Moines, and will be coming back here in the near future.
I would have liked to have given The Grumpy Goat a favorable review but I cannot. After being seated we waited between 20 and 25 minutes and not a single person approached us. I understand it was a busy Saturday night, two tables with customers, two waitresses, but is 20 to 25 minutes acceptable? We have had this problem before but never have we been so ignored. One waitress walk by us three times and was only serving one table. I doubt if we will ever go back.
