Renate's German Restaurant

We really enjoyed the authentic food and atmosphere. Rouladen was on the menu and my wife really enjoyed it - it’s hard to find in the Chicago area. My sausage platter was exactly what I was expecting. We live over 25 miles away and will happily be returning.

Enjoyed the authentic German cuisine, nice family atmosphere and delicious schnitzel, baked goods and appetizers. Will return soon for breakfast.

Great service. Food was good and large servings. Unfortunately there were only a few customers. Only 1 other table occupier for lunch

Really nice place with real German food. Sorry I can't remember what we had but it was very very good with plenty to eat. Great service and our waitress was able to explain the different dishes. Next time in area I will go back. It's also wheelchair accessible.

We had a good dinner and really liked this place.
Our server was attentive and had set up a cute bday table, since we were celebrating a bday. Service was great ! Also had German music playing in the background, which was nice.
Atmosphere , well it is a strip mall restaurant and was a extremely hot day. Given that the place was still clean , comfortable and organized.
Food was good. Some really good and some decent but not great. Loved our soups and salad. The German salad and dressing was spot on. The cream of chicken soup was delish. Recommend the sausage platter and the roasted potatoes as a side. Potatoes can use some salt but that is easily added. These were our starters
Our mains were good and large portions sizes. Certainly value for the money.
The fav was the spaetzle with goulash over. The schnitzels were excellent but the sauce was off.wgich took it down overall. You can get a side of Knoedel or balls of stuffing and that was good , however the gravy took away from its flavor.

Beer is served in steins and was awesome! Loved them but they ran out of the radler which was our favorite.

We got complimentary cakes for our bday and appreciated that. All in all we enjoyed the place and most good with a few caveats. Worth checking out if you like German food.

I love dining in at Old Salem Cafe - Renata's German restaurant. They are always so nice and friendly, the food is authentic, and amazing. The selection is outstanding. You can order breakfast, lunch or dinner. The German music playing in the background is also a very nice touch.

The cream of chicken soup, cordon blue and goulash are a 10/10.
The pretzel bread melts in your mouth.
We had a private restaurant…most people were doing carry out.
Prices so fair and portions GIGANTIC.
As another reviewer said, this is a hidden gem!

Mothers Day brunch. $48.00 eachThis was not worth it. Uncle Bill's would of been a better choice. French toast, scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes tasted like they where made yesterday. Pork dish was hard, meat in gravey was ok. Red cabbage and sourquart ok. Liver dumpling and cream of chicken soup where good. And rolls. Desert table was good. We will never go back...
