I went during the bridge lighting ceremony. The place was packed. Food was good , except the fries (I wasn't a fan but you might be. Live music was playing and all were having a good time. Service got 4 stars because they were a bit slow. I know they were packed but the owner needs to schedule more people to work that day.
Parking: Tight quarters.
Kid-friendliness: Somewhat .. it is a tavern After all.
Wheelchair accessibility: Yes but through the front door only

Food was just ok for the price for all 3 of us but the service and atmosphere was great. Parking can fill up on busy fri/sat nights but again its worth a stop. I might try again but great food is not hard to find in the Northwest Suburbs. If they step up the kitchen food this place would rock !

It was OK, not bad, but nothing to write home about. The 'Oldest Restaurant in Illinois' claim is a nice, charming magnet for patrons. They also advertise their burgers and source (Dorflers Meats), so I tried one. My 'medium' ordered burger came well-done and dry, so I couldn't really appreciate the claimed superior source of their meat compared to the average patty... too bad. Rueben sandwich was same, just OK, hardly any coleslaw (sprinkles), and slightly dry as well. The cheese helped a lot. It wasn't bad, just not outstanding. Service was good, and the bar looked interesting. One long 35 ft piece of mahogany. Beautiful. But didn't get to sit there as there was a game on. 😕 Would I go back? If I was starving and close by, maybe. But there are too many great and unique spots all around Chicago and not enough time to try all. So I'd probably opt to try something else.

Since it was a relatively quick ride on the train north of Chicago, I had to visit the oldest restaurant in Illinois. I really enjoyed the history and ambiance. The food leans toward the area's German heritage, and is well executed.

I had never been here before and had zero expectations was just looking for a nice meal after a lovely day out. This restaurant really took the wind out of my sails. The whole restaurant had an odd prevailing odor in it. Everything had an inch of dust on it. The carpet is grungy, and theres dust shields over the ceiling vents to catch the dust that falls out of the vents. The food was extremely underwhelming. Bland and greasy sums it up best. The prices were good for the quality of food so it's a good value at least. The staff was attentive and friendly. But its just so hard to get past the smell and lack of cleanliness of this place. It may have been around since 1847, but at this rare it won't be around much longer.

I wish I could give 0 stars for the experience my family and I had. We were so excited to try the Strawberry Fest specials yesterday when we came in for lunch. There were two tables in front and behind us that came in ten minutes after we sat down, and we were the only African American family in the establishment. The waiter we had managed to take their food order, give them their food, and give them their checks to go before we got our food. He checked on every other table, and we had to flag the waiter down to check on us just to receive water and drinks. He finally brought us drinks, but said our food order was “lost.” Unfortunately, we decided to not eat their food since they “lose” minority table’s food. There was no apology from the manager onsite(6/22 at 12:30pm), and they just comped our drinks so we would go. It is so disappointing to see have this experience, and I am absolutely disgusted by the staff’s treatment to African American people. I hope whoever owns this place gives their staff a lesson on racism and teaches them to serve anyone that comes into their establishment.
