J. Alexander's Restaurant

We were there on Saturday night and it didn’t disappoint. The service was outstanding and top notch. It was a little loud as you see the staff hustling and bustling. Jody was enjoyable the knowledge and recommendations she offered were great. She offered soup or salad to everyone. The way she described the chili as spice in your life red river chili with the description of toppings. I was sold. Then the filet was melt in your mouth.
To end the night with a warm carrot cake and chocolate martini. Yum

Ambience was amazing. Food was so-so.
The service was not great- actually, the WORST service I had in a long time. Here for a birthday celebration and had Jody N. as our server.
I get it, it could get busy serving multiple tables on a Saturday night. But this particular server had VERY POOR SERVICE, which I noticed that poor service is an ongoing issue here based on recent Google reviews.

Our server comes to our table every 15-20 minutes for half-assed work/assistance. Very unattentive and not accommodating at all. You know, bringing 4 straws or utensils on a table of 7 might not be big of an issue, but bringing straws, leaving for 20 minutes, coming back to say hold on I’ll be back again, and not come back for another 20 is just WILD. Our server rarely came back to our table— and when she did, she was VERY RUSHED and just did not care— compared to how she does with the tables next to us. She did not even offer water- we had to ask/remind her for little things each time. I thought that in the restaurant industry, we shouldn’t even ask for basic things that should be given/offered in the first place (ESPECIALLY this is an upscale American dining).
Everyone in my table thinks she’s age & racial profiling, as we are Asians and younger (age 8 to 55), and I think it’s sad. She was very sweet and accommodating to the elderly people next to us (mostly Americans) who even arrived later than us. She checked in on them every SO Often, even asked if they wanted any coffee, cappuccino, etc after their meal/dessert.

The biggest part was when my family and I were joking around about singing happy birthday to our birthday celebrant (who hates attention) and “embarrass” him by asking for a cake with candle (which we usually does). I asked Miss Jody for the dessert menu. Which she REFUSED to give- instead, she upsettingly said “WE HAVE KEY LIME, Carrot cake, and ice cream.” I could’ve sworn there’s one more b/c she gave us a smaller menu at the beginning with specials of the day, including specialty dessert. I nicely asked, “what do you suggest for the birthday boy?” Which she immediately and defensively said “YEA I HEARD YOU EARLIER” implying she heard us talking about getting a dessert for a birthday. I said “okay, so what do you suggest?” What pissed us off is she said “WELL IT’S ON US ANYWAY?! THERE’S ONLY ONE OPTION, the keylime!” I was so confused and taken aback because first of all - Where did that attitude came from? And trust me, we could 100% pay for any desserts that sounds good to us, that’s why we asked for recommendations. This server probably thinks we can’t pay or something with her NASTY remarks and behavior. God forbid we ask for recommendations from our server. Definitely ruined the night for everybody. And the fact that she behaved like that infront of our two younger kids 🥴 Unbelievable. I’m sorry but I work in healthcare for YEARS also serving people & trying to appropriately accommodate their needs - but this customer service is just straight up trash & very upsetting.

We wanted to take away the 18% gratuity that’s already added on our check- but I think she needs it more to put a smile on her face, despite the very POOR and nasty service. Never dining in this location again, even if this is our go-to location.

PS: I usually write nice and honest reviews. But our server really crossed boundaries this time, so I had to write one about this issue.

We ate here tonight for my birthday dinner and overall had a good experience. I rated it 4 stars because our server was MIA for like 30 min after our food arrived and we needed something and had to go without it bit other than that it was great. Steak was flavorful, drinks were tasty, and they even had a hidden kids meal. We'll come back for sure.

It had been a few years since my last visit & this one reinforced my hesitancy. I ordered the New York Strip rare, but it came out medium-well (no redness at all). After sending it back, my new steak was cold in the middle (clearly had been frozen), so I left hungry. All other in my party were ok with the food (burgers mainly).
Living in Europe now for almost a decade, I’m used to fresh high quality meats. I’m now so hesitant with chains like J.A. & having anything but the basics. Disappointing.

So I was boring and just ordered a club sandwich which was fine but I got a side of vegetables instead of fries and had the bartender pick for me she got me the broccoli was freaking amazing! Like I should have just ordered a huge plate of it. I don't even really like broccoli all that much but in any case it was the highlight of my day which I suppose is actually pretty sad. Service was good, efficient and timely both from the bartender and the food runner. It appears to be a well run establishment.

The restaurant was upscale and very clean. Our server (Emily?) may be the best server I’ve ever had. Super fast with drinks and ver knowledgeable. As for the food. One person got the steak burger and it was great. I got the filet mignon skewers. They could pass as good sirloin. It was not the best but ok. I would definitely go back to try other item menus.

J. Alexander's has it all going on . . . great food, outstanding service and a romantic/relaxing atmosphere. I recommend making a reservation; they are always packed. The drinks are terrific.

We went to the oak Brook location and the birthday party was in North Brook and we all were late the place closed at 9pm because they knew what had happened they let us stay until 1030 or 11 I don't know they didn't rush out and I appreciate the staff for that THANK YOU!!!!!

Called in for take out, rude. The best is that on carry out orders they charge a 6% packaging fee. No mention of it, just a random add on and then they want a tip.
Never again. Food is blah and menu has not changed in many years.

Had an amazing dinner here on Saturday. We celebrated a birthday and boy did service go above and beyond. Food was amazing everyone enjoyed their blue cheese crusted ribeye or prime rib as well We had the pleasure of having Jody as our server. She went above and beyond to make the evening spectacular. We will be back and can’t wait to have her again. Thank you J Alexander’s for making this a special night

I went to J. Alexander's with a group of seven on the middle of the week.

The short review is that the restaurant was clean, well maintained, they started us quickly, and the food was awesome. It was a little loud, but not too bad. I would recommend J. Alexander's if you are in the area. Read on if you want more details.

Apon entering the restaurant I was impressed with the decor. It was very nice and clean. We had a reservation ave arrived relatively early. Even though we were early they were able to seat our group right away. It was a little loud at out table but not overwhelming. Most of us got the special, which was the Filet Mignon Medallions with a salad. The special came with Smashed Potatoes and broccoli. I requested to swap out the potatoes for the Macaroni and Cheese. The salad came first and it was excellent. The croutons were the best. When my dinner came it had the Macaroni and Cheese and the Smashed Potatoes. I took this as a sign that I needed to try the potatoes. I was right the Smashed Potatoes and the Macaroni and Cheese were great. The steak was done just right and tasted great. I would recommend trying J. Alexander's if you are in the area.
