Stopped in for the first time today. Food and drinks were excellent, staff was very friendly, funny and informative. The owner even made my mom a little cocktail for her birthday. Prices were very fair, will be stopping in again soon!

I'll preface this review with I am a tiki fanatic and a Chesterton native. It is wild to me see a tiki bar in Chesterton of all places, but also very exciting. I have visited twice: once on my birthday, and a few months after that. Overall, I would more than willingly recommend Velvet Tiki.
I saw someone describe some of the decorations as being cheap and tacky from raiding a Party City but I think that applies to only a few items, but really I don't know how you could make dry grass look expensive. The tables and a lot of the stuff around the restaurant are quite nice and there's obvious care that has been put into it. If you've ever priced out tiki mugs or the tiki glassware, you know they are not cheap, and most of the cocktails come in very nice mugs or glassware.
The food I would rate as being overall good but some of them are just not great. The Velvet Sample Platter is probably the best overall item to order if you have a group. Everything that was on it was delicious. The Coconut Chicken has no right being as good as it is. It is phenomenal. The tots, Irish Nachos, and even the Irish Eggrolls are also pretty good. That said, I would not recommend the Bison Legs under any circumstances.
The drinks are mostly fantastic, although there are some strange choices. The Tiki Zombie is a good Zombie, the Volcano Sling is absolutely delicious, the Betty Boop Juice is a little sweet for my taste but is enjoyable, the Jungle Bird is as good as any other, the Daquiri is perfect, and the Mai Swank is a fine spine on the Mai Tai. The rum selection is also decent if a little heavy on the Bacardi but the liqueurs are not the cheap stuff. Some of the cocktails are a little confusing and some that I tried were not great, particularly the sour. But overall, good drinks.
The owner(s) are definitely into tiki and know their stuff. I like having this place around. They need better signage though and an easier way to get into the parking lot!
I would definitely recommend it.

I came to get my tires changed and accidentally brought a live catfish in here with me. It was in a ziplock bag in my pocket. A man named Gram offered to cook it for me on a car battery.
I said “This thing is still alive, pal” but Gram said “No big deal, have you ever had lobster? It’s better when the fish is still alive!”
Begrudgingly, I said “Ok.” Because I didn’t want him to try any monkey business with my car like leaving the lug nuts slightly loose.
So he took my catfish into the back and then came out with a fried piece of fish and handed it to me.
The fish was clearly a lake peach, small, delicate and sensually flakey. It was cold like it had been in the employee breakroom refrigerator.
I said “This isn’t my catfish” but he assured me it was.
I said “I didn’t hear any car battery sparks or nothing!” but Gram was adamant that he gave me my own fish back to eat.
I’ve got a feeling he took my fish home for his kids because he kept showing me pictures of them the entire time I was in there saying stuff like “I’m so proud of them, they deserve a fish.” and “They’re growing like weeds in a pond full of catfish.”
I’m not a detective but I’m also not a dolt. I know when someone is yanking my monkey chain!
I took the cold filet and ate it in front of him because I was kind of hungry and also I didn’t want him to steal any of the air fresheners from my glove box while he was completing the work.
As I ate he said “Have you ever had a better fish?” He was real close to me and his eyes looked crazy under the shop light.
I nodded yes, not wanting him to steal my Hawaiian Hula Dancer dashboard ornament while he was polishing the dashboard (they do complimentary detailing here!)
I just hope if my catfish is out there, he’s having a good life. I’d love to see him again in this life or beyond.
