This place used to be a staple in my Mexican family for decades. The food quality has gone WAY WAY down and the prices went UP. Most of the time the bakery is completely empty, with no bread of pastries, or food. I’m not even sure why that side of the restaurant is even open. They make the pastries and bread ONCE A WEEK. Which means you’re no longer getting fresh pastries or bread, and you’re paying double for stale bread sitting in a case for a week.
Overall I’m sad they not only gentrified themselves and lost a core part of their community, but also their food is just awful and stale now.
I always try to every 6 months to give this place a chance and everytime they fail so miserably. It’s so sad my favorite bakery growing up is now just dust.

All of their food is authentic. We especially love the menudo, pork taco meat and chilaquiles. The bakery has a large variety.

Me and hubby come here every Sunday morning for soup. He gets pozole and I get chicken noodles the soups are amazing. We also buy their fresh bread and donuts. We drive from Merrillville which is not that far but their soups are worth it. Also, their service is amazing. Paula is a great waitress and so friendly and nice. We love seeing her every Sunday. It does get packed but it's worth the wait which is never that long either.

El Ranchero is still amazing with their food and service. My daddy would treat me to this years ago and I recently visited this place and it just brought back so many good memories. I'm grateful this place is still kicking it ?
