We love the Umi Grill. My wife and I have been coming to the Umi Grill in Terre Haute whenever we pass through on I-70. Best Sushi for a hundred miles, give or take :-)

This use to be my absolute favorite place to eat in Terre Haute. Not sure what happened. The last two times I have been there both the food and service has been terrible. I have been ordering the orange go go rolls since 2005. I had to send them back last time because they tasted rotten. On this last trip I ordered the ahi nachos which has also always been great. But the chips were super stale and hard to eat. I had to go ask someone for a drink refill because the server never came back. We also asked for a booth. With 3 booths open they still told us no. No one sat in the booths the entire time we were there. They have set us in the booths before no problem.
Place is starting to go downhill. I know it has new owners, not sure if that is the issue. Just be aware it is slowly turning into a place that you won’t want to dine in.

Easily the worst sushi I've ever had. Was sever a slimy pile, barely identifiable as sushi and tasting little better than it looked.

Always delicious
The crab puffs were large, full, and delicious. Had the seafood fried rice that could have reasonably served 3. Good flavors and service was nice.

The sushi was good but definitely could have been better. Ended up getting the ramen bowl and wasn't to impressed by it. The noodles weren't cooked all the way and had a large clump that was hard. The ramen seemed very plan compared to other places. Service was also okay.

Food was ok, but the menu needed a little more variety to interest no fish people. Prices were good and portions were big.

Food was good. Presentation was very well done. Service was not that great. Waited 45 minutes for drinks and 55 for appetizers. They did apologize for the wait. Wait staff had family friend in they had not seen in a while. Understand that but not 45 minutes. Especially with over a $250 bill. Get a booth for a more intimate setting because otherwise it feels like cafeteria seating. The food was great. Though gets one less star because the sashimi was warm so was the sushi. Food presentation was on point. Beautifully done. Service needs work. You can't have that many dishes on such a small table all at once.

Food was absolutely incredible. I was driving through the area and saw a stellar review that swayed me to try it. Absolutely adding it to my favorites in Indiana!

I’ve given this place more chances than it deserved. When Chi owned it, the restaurant was already mediocre but at least consistent. Since the ownership change about a year ago, it’s gone further downhill fast—and this last visit sealed it for me.
This was my third time dining here under the new owners. The first time, I noticed they’d switched to a cheaper, inferior wasabi. I mentioned this to the waitress, who then confirmed with the kitchen that they had indeed changed brands. The second visit showed some improvement—they were using better wasabi again. But now, on my third visit, they’ve clearly downgraded again, likely to save a buck.
The tuna was alarmingly low quality, rubbery—so much so that I genuinely questioned whether it was safe to eat. The soft shell crab tasted like it had been fried hours (or days) earlier: hard, rocky, and completely devoid of crispness. The sake? Absolutely undrinkable. I’ve had cheap sake before, but this was worse than anything I thought possible. Nigori Ozeki is already bottom-tier, and somehow they managed to serve something even more unpleasant.
Service matched the food—disinterested, slow, and unhelpful. It’s clear the new owners are cutting corners at every level, and the result is a restaurant that’s not just disappointing, but borderline offensive to anyone who appreciates Japanese cuisine.
I won’t be back. And I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who values quality, freshness, or basic hospitality.
