I visited Penny's Diner Saturday, May 24th. It seemed to busy. The food was amazing, the hearty breakfast and the french toast combo! However the older female server could have done more. She looked like she was more interested in her phone than her customers. She only served us drinks and took our order. She seemed in a bad mood and complained about having to work. Meanwhile the cook brought us our food, checked on us all the while bussing tables. She was very friendly and doing the work of 3. The server needs to step it up and do her job that is the 1 star for service and 4 star for atmosphere.

Just passing through on my way back to Michigan, and I'm glad i did. This was the best chicken fried steak I've ever had, and i am definitely coming in with my friend in the future to have it again!! You must stop in!!

Tried for the first time yesterday and the waitress seemed confused maybe she was new đŸ€·â€â™€ïž but the cook was so outgoing and friendly just interacting with him would have made it a positive experience! However the food was also amazing and not bad prices and really fun atmosphere! Would highly recommend! We will definitely be returning

NEVER EAT AT PENNYS DINER

When we pulled up to Penny’s Diner , there was no cars or people at all at the diner. That should have been our clue to turn around and go, however, we decided to give them a try . Anyone who knows me knows that I have never in my life been one to complain or leave a bad review about food at a restaurant because life has taught me to be grateful for the food that I do have. However, my family and I had the most horrific experience tonight at Penny’s Diner in Coffeyville, Kansas. If there was a way to rate them with a zero or even a negative star, I would do so.

When we ordered our food, the waitress literally asked each person three times what they wanted because she didn’t pay any attention to us. Then when she got to the register to put in our order, she had to yell out across the restaurant to ask what we wanted with our main entrĂ©e. It seemed like she didn’t know what she was doing! Aside from our regular food orders for dinner we ordered two appetizers for our table. After she started bringing out the food, I asked her three plus different times where our appetizers were at. She continuously said they were coming and would be out with the rest of the food. However, that was never the case. She did not bring them to us at all because she said she forgot to put them in with our order even though she stood there and wrote them down or acted like she wrote them down.
When I asked about them the final time, she said she thought that I wanted a lot of extra mushrooms on my mushroom and swiss burger.
When we received our food, my husband ordered a Reuben sandwich which comes with corn beef, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing and cheese when he got it. It was just cheese very little meat, no sauerkraut and an abundance of a weird dressing of some sort. The cook yelled out across the restaurant and said he apologized that he forgot to put the sauerkraut on the Reuben and he’d have it right out so the waitress brought out the sauerkraut that was cold and tasted like it was rotten.
My daughter-in-law is pregnant and a severe diabetic so she had to choose certain foods because of not being able to have fried foods or food that is high in carbs. On their menu, there are no diabetic options. When she chose to get something as simple as cottage cheese that is on their menu because that is one thing she could have, she did not get it. They instead gave her two enormous portions of mashed potatoes and gravy then when we asked about it; the Cook yelled out across the restaurant and said that he apologized, they didn’t have any cottage cheese because it wasn’t being ordered any longer by the owner because a former employee would stand around and eat it all.
Everyone else’s food was lukewarm and overloaded with an abundance of salt and was absolutely disgusting. About 10 minutes before we left she brought us out the two appetizers that we ordered and said that they were going to be free of charge because she forgot to put them in and then there was a confusion over them so she wanted to give that to us free of charge and then discount the meals because of all the mishaps. I believe she knew I was very mad!
Even though she did that, I would never ever go back there or recommend that establishment to anyone because of their service and the very, very unpalatable food. Not to mention the waitress dumped the gravy from the mashed potatoes all over my husband and the floor. Not only that but every single one of us wound up getting sick from eating the food that they received from there. The employees would rather be outside smoking and talking.

Disappointing First Visit – Hoping for Improvement

I had to stay overnight in Coffeyville for work and, as I always try to do when traveling, I wanted to support a local spot instead of going to a chain. Penny’s Diner looked like a cute, classic place for a home-cooked meal, and I decided to place an online order for pickup on Monday, May 19, 2025, around 8 PM.

I ordered the Monterey Chicken, which was listed as being smothered with mushrooms, jalapeños, onions, tomatoes, and cheese, with a choice of two sides. I selected mashed potatoes with gravy and a side salad with ranch dressing, along with a dinner roll. For dessert, I ordered a chocolate sundae with strawberry topping, expecting the classic presentation with whipped cream and a cherry, as described on the menu.

I arrived about 10 minutes after ordering. The diner was quiet—only one other car in the lot and two patrons at the counter. The young woman at the front was polite and tried to help, but there was confusion about my order. The cook came out and began asking me what I wanted on the meal, despite the receipt listing everything. I explained I just wanted it prepared as described on the menu. He mentioned he was new and seemed unsure of how to prepare it, which made the experience feel awkward and uncomfortable.

After waiting another 20 minutes, the cook said he’d double the food for the wait, which I appreciated in theory. Unfortunately, once I got back to my hotel, the meal was a mess. The chicken was drowned in mashed potatoes and gravy, my side salad and dinner roll were missing entirely, and the “sundae” turned out to be more like a milkshake with cherries—no strawberries, no whipped cream.

The young lady was kind and helpful, but the kitchen staff clearly lacked training. If I could offer feedback to management, it would be to ensure clear written procedures are available for each menu item—especially when new staff are working unsupervised. Customers generally expect meals to be prepared as listed unless they request changes.

I spent $20 on a meal that didn’t come close to meeting expectations. Sadly, I could have spent half that at a fast-food place and had a more accurate order. I hope to give Penny’s another try in the future, but meaningful improvements will be needed before I can recommend it.

We walked out. The service was horrible. The waitress made a trip to kitchen for each item. Serving pancakes- bring the syrup with you. Serving coffee with cream - bring a spoon. Wear an apron and carry a few things like QR code card, straws.

This is not a place to drive by and miss!
We stopped in looking for something other than a fast food chain, and we were pleasantly surprised. There were so many options available on the menu and the food came out, piping hot and exceeded our expectations. I was on a clean eating plan, so I just got a plain salad, but the chicken breast was juicy and cooked to perfection. The lettuce was crisp and all of the veggies were fresh. My husband got the best looking burger with some monster onion rings and really great homemade ranch. I highly suggest stopping by if you were in Coffeyville Kansas and it’s a bonus that they are open 24 hours! Will definitely be returning

Our new favorite restaurant. We live in Pryor, Oklahoma and pass through Coffeyville, Kansas many times. We were hungry and decided to give this seemly small diner a chance. Best decision ever! We dined in and placed our order online. My mother and I had their turkey meal and my niece had their grilled cheese. The food was absolutely decious with huge portions for a really low cost. Perfect when feeding kids. We will definitely be coming back. We are looking forward to trying more menu items. The staff were courteous and friendly. We highly recommend this restaurant to everyone, especially travelers looking for great American food and a happy dining experience!

Excellent place to eat before and after work, even on at any given day.
Penny’s is the restaurant you always want to be.
Never get tired of the food, good variety.
Always open, never closed.
Better than eat at home.

Service was awesome but the food definitely needs work.
Our server, not sure of his name, but he was awesome and so friendly.

Great little spot for a quick and tasty dinner. I went in and was a little surprised that I was the only person there, but it was a Monday. I had the Frisco Burger with fries and some cheese sticks as an appetizer. The burger was cooked really well, charred and flavorful but not too dry. The bread could have been toasted a little longer for my liking but that’s just a personal preference. The fries were perfect. So crispy and a little flaky on the outside but soft on the inside with great flavor. The cheese sticks were good too but not quite as life changing as the rest of my food. Everything came out hot and fresh and I didn’t have to wait long either.

The service was great, although like I said I was the only customer there. I believe my servers name was Manny. He checked in on me often, got me everything I needed and was very respectful. I also appreciate that they have the option to order on your phone from the table. It’s not for everyone but it’s always nice to have it available.

Only in town for the week, but will definitely be stopping by again!
