Stopped by Gallo Grande today with a friend for a late lunch. First time visiting and we weren't sure what to order. Our server (Oswaldo) did an OUTSTANDING job. He suggested a couple dishes and within minutes they were at the table. I highly recommend Gallo Grande and if you are able to request Oswaldo (think that was his name) do so!!
First off, I thought all the five-star reviews of this place were BS. Not that I don't hand out five-star reviews, but a place with all five star reviews is hard to believe. With that in mind, I tried the place out. Initial impressions were a very cozy, warm atmosphere. The place was squeaky clean. I were greeted by a fine young man from El Salvador. His mastery of English was phenomenal and it was a pleasure asking him details about the food in which he replied in perfect English. Items ordered were cheese enchiladas, nachos supreme, and the Seven Seas soup. The waiter brought out the chips and salsa which we're basically chips and salsa. Being an occasional captive of Dodge City cuisine, My expectations weren't high to say the least. When the server brought out the the nachos I was starting to pay attention. First thing that caught my eye was the presentation. I have dined in many Mexican restaurants in Dodge City and it seems whenever I order nachos supreme or any variation thereof, I get served something that resembles swine food that my grandfather used to feed the pigs prior to slaughter. Presentation is one thing, but taste is another and to put it mildly it was some of the best nachos around. (As much as you can get excited about nachos) Moving on to the cheese enchiladas, they were absolutely delicious. Instead of being drowned by some generic red gravy that was purchased from Sysco, they truly tasted homemade and were deliciously fresh. Okay now for the mind-blowing main event! The seven seas soup. It was mind-blowing! I live in the Houston area where good Mexican restaurants are ubiquitous. I have tasted delicious seafood soup cooked Mexican style many times. I have never in my 66 years on God's green earth tasted anything as good as the seafood soup here. The seafood was absolutely fresh like it was off the boat and the broth was to die for. You could taste the labor and the love that went into the broth as it had a very distinctive fresh ocean taste. You could tell that the broth originated with boiled shrimp heads and shells and perfectly seasoned. It had a little hot twang to it on the finish, but nothing overpowering. So, yes I give it five stars. I would hope that you would try this place based on my recommendation, and would only hope that they could do it again a second time for you like they did it for me. I will definitely be back. As far as the seven seas soup, crazy as it seems, the bar has been set for me in Dodge City Kansas of all places. One more noteworthy comment. I just couldn't believe how empty the place was. If this place was in my hometown there would be a line out the door. But I guess that's the problem with trying to differentiate yourself as a Mexican restaurant in a sea of Mexican restaurants in Dodge City Kansas.
