Hot rodz BBQ has some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Brisket was perfect. Mac and cheese complimented very well.
I feel like every time I wanted to try and come to this place there was always a reason that distracted me from getting here on time. But, I finally did it. This place is so effing tiny, and it’s feels almost like you’re in someone’s home. “It’s a vibe.” I came during a slow time but there were people slowly trickling in and out and the employees there was familiar with everyone that walked through that door, telling you that they were regulars. It’s probably weird seeing an outsider but for me, they were very welcoming and stayed patient with me when I was trying to figure out what I really wanted out of their menu. They so have a lot of options so I couldn’t decide! The price here is fair and you do get a lot for what you pay for, and the food, meat, juicy, mac and cheese, creamy and I got a little surprise dessert that I didn’t know came with the meal. It was an oatmeal cream pie, and I don’t know about you, but I love oatmeal cream pies and honestly it was a great way to end that hefty entrée! Stop by.
This was my third of many visits. The smoked meatloaf is absolutely awesome. The Semi Sweet tea is delicious. Lots of interesting decor on the walls. Ron and his crew really have a great place to get some barbecue.
A really great experience! Good BBQ, great atmosphere and the young man that took the money at the end... Well, he was a breath of fresh air in a world of uncertainty. He was definitely brought up right. Thank you for letting me meet you...
Would not recommend.. reading the other high reviews i had high expectations however i was significantly disappointed in the quality of the food. My burnt ends were not made that day as they were soggy and had the soft and chewy feeling of microwaved meat. It lacked the flavor and texture i had been accustomed to with fresh BBQ. Like others have said the green beans were borderline mushy and flavorless..the owner was good company though.
There's a host of visits where sub par or bad food can be considered the cost of an adventurous palate no foodie worth his or her salt conjures up more buyers remorse than a visit to a bad BBQ establishment. Sadly to say this was one of those tales. With the appearance of a salvage yard I pushed into a cluttered tiny dining room with high hopes. Hopes so high I forced myself to look beyond what causes a very organized borderline OCD foodie to clutch his pearls from the vast amount of random items that lay about in an effort to view it as folksy. Moreover the grime on the floor or inability of the one and only service person present (likely the owner) to wash his hands prior to making my food after taking ny order. Yet he was friendly so due to the glowing recommendation I received, I pushed myself. My inner man said that filth is character and must be a foreshadowing of good smoked meat to come. My inner voice is as much of a liar as the tasteless asshats who told me this place was worth the courage it took me muster up a 25$ lunch order of brisket burnt ends, smashed Yukon potato, Mac and cheese, and baked beans. Hot Rods BBq disproves the theory of "where there's smoke there's fire" because while my jammed full Styrofoam lunch place bellowed of smoke the meal was not fire. It was trash and after eating beef that was viscous, tough lacking all manner of depth or baked beans which mirrored an elevated can of off brand pork-n-beans a Yukon potato avoid of a whisper of salt or season and rounded off by a Mac n curdled cheese portion that would make a toddler turn up its nose, it soon found itself in the trash where it fittingly belonged. Look read my resume, while I tell the truth I more often don't leave scathing reviews and will revisit an establishment on the off chance it was a bad cook or a bad day giving particular credence to locally owned eateries. Therefore when you read a scathing review I'm doing hard working consumers a solid. This was possibly the worst bbq I've encountered in my days upon God's green earth and I've eaten at gas stations and in 3rd world countries across the globe. Take for what it's worth but folks the food was inedible.
Not only was the food delicious (hot rodz sandwich and sausage/coleslaw plate) and generously portioned, but the service was outstanding as well. And now we know what a Hillbilly Fortune Cookie is! This is the kind of place where I want to eat BBQ - personality plus.
The owner is very kind and personable! The ribs are awesome! They went above and beyond to make my special order and appreciate us as a military family. Very inviting atmosphere!
Definitely made some improvement from years ago. Didn't write any review then because i would have given it low rating. Visited the place again and the quality has improved. I would say the brisket is the star of the menu- fatty, tender, moist not overly seasoned- world class. The sausage is ok would prefer to have more heat but that's just me. The ribs however was a disappointment. It's dry, hard. There's burnt scabs which was inedible. When we first tried their food years ago- the ribs was better, and the brisket was dry. All the sides we tried even the cookie were great. There seems to be a lack of consistency with quality of the food. I hope they make it better as I want the place to really thrive.
This place is awesome! The bbq is out of this world! We loved the atmosphere and the staff is so nice. The owner took the time to talk to us and made us feel at home. We will definitely be stopping here next time we are in Kansas!

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. The Owner was super inviting and cheerful. I had the Carolina sandwich with pulled pork with green beans and collard greens with a semi sweet tea. I just got done working and decided to try this place I haven't had anything all day to eat and this place craved my apatite. I heard great things from coworkers. Everything lived up to what I was told.
I’m a pretty big BBQ fan and our visit to Junction City (vs. Kansas City) on our way to Colorado Springs was motivated by the reviews for Hot Rodz. The hype is real! The pork ribs and brisket I had were as good as or better than anything I’ve had before and the “big” mac ‘n cheese (with a scoop of pulled pork on top) was a solid 10/10 on my daughter’s mac’n cheese scale. Best of all perhaps is Ron himself. He is an amazing host and made us feel instantly at home. This is a very long way to come but I hope to be back soon. The beef rib is definitely the next thing I’ll try.
I love this place. They are often sold out of what I crave most here, but that is fine, it just goes to show how good it is. They sell out daily *because* it is so good. I hope they continue this success, they deserve it. So friendly too. The chef should be proud. Amazing bbq. Hopefully next time I head out this way I can get my fingers on the beef rib I crave. Ammmmmaaaaazingly good. Love it!
If you've had better BBQ, you're lying. Everything we ordered was as good as or better than anything else we've eaten from anywhere else. The most humble owner you've ever met and what a wonderfully kind man. I can't emphasize enough how good the food is here. Truly special.
Stop here yall! I did a 3 week cross country road trip with my family, and this was the best food we had in the entire country! Not only was the food the best barbecue I've ever had, but I can't stress enough how welcome the owner and the staff made us feel. Real hidden gem!We tried to buy a miniature leg lamp from them that we saw on a shelf there (Christmas Story is a family tradition for us). The owner wouldn't sell it to us. He gave it to us and said he was just happy someone else could enjoy it as much as he has. Would recommend 849/10
