Very cool place to visit. Great food. Great history. The guy was very knowledgeable about the history of the place. Will definitely be back
No words can describe our experience. If I had to pick… Connectedness. We learned so much about the deeply-rooted history of this town, along with beliefs and traditions connected to the natives of this land. I want to try everything on the menu. But most of all, I want to return and spend more time with Shirley and Ken. If only the world had more folks like this in it. ♥️
The food was unique, delicious, one-of-a-kind menu. So many food selections that let you appreciate foods that are native to America's West. Delicious. The interior is captivating with all the historic items to view. It would take several visits to see them all. The husband and wife team are so knowledgeable about the history of the Kansas Trail. Loved listening and asking questions. Don't be in a hurry. Delicious food takes time to prepare, but the stories, trinkets, historical treasures, and information satisfy your curiosity while prodding you to want to learn more. Will be back.
This place is as much about history as it is about food, so plan accordingly. There may be only one person to take your order, cook your food, and serve it, so expect to spend some time looking around the exhibits. Also, if the proprietor has time, you may hear about the history of the house and get answers to any questions you may have about the town. The menu has a large selection, and we were pleased with our dinners. The portions were not as large as at many restaurants, but they were fine for us.
Quite possibly the worst food and service we've ever had. It is a small local cafe which we usually enjoy. The server was on her phone and it took a while for her to come to the table. They were out of the daily special so my husband ordered a cheeseburger. It was very overcooked. 1/4 lb was $9.00...no side. I ordered the chicken fried chicken lunch special. They were out of white gravy, I said brown gravy was okay. The potatoes would have been good but they were cold. The corn they served with it had to have been reheated 6 times. The tea that came with it was instant tea. We had to ask for silverware and napkins. For $29 we were very disappointed.

When I researched places to eat in Council Grove, Kansas, the Trail Days Cafe & Museum kept popping up. I was intrigued. Dinner and history in a museum?!!! Thankfully, we arrived into town before it was too late and chose to eat here. It is run by an older husband and wife team. She cooks and he shares stories of the place and the area around there. It is an experience- in a good way! My Swedish meatballs were delish. He recommended the Indian Bread (dill, sour cream???) which did not disappoint. I wish we had more time because I would have liked to linger at this museum. Rich in history and lots of stories. I'm sure that we just scratched the surface!
A very unique place to eat. It's as much about the history as the food, though the food was good. They were out of a number of menu items, but this is a non-profit to support the historic restoration of the building. The older couple that worked there weren't real fast, but they were passionate about preserving the history of the place, and sharing with their guests. Small, only about 5 tables, and like I say speed wasn't the priority for them, but it was still good service, very friendly and eager to have guests, and interesting history.
The food was great, bread exceptional and history lesson top notch! Highly recommend making Council Grove a visit and eat and tour this restaurant!!
Good food and friendly service. This is a good choice if you want something different from fast-food.

Our neighbors invited my husband and I to go out to dinner here with them. They shared that it’s quite the experience. So true! Good food, but even better stories from the owner. It was a real treat. So much history to see and hear about.
Love the variety of menu options. A lil something for everyone. The daily specials are always tasty. I can't forget to mention how friendly the staff is too💕

It was good food and enjoyed the bison and elk dinners. Ken was very pleasant to talk to and very informative. He knows his history of the area really well.
We were on road trip and looking for a relatively quick stop for something more than fast food. We did not realize there was one person doing everything. He was friendly but loved to talk about history. We spent 10 minutes listening to him talk before we even got to order. It took an hour to get a ham and cheese sandwich. It was also extremely warm in the dining room. Great place if you want to stay a while and are not in a hurry…it was not for us.
