Shakertown Trustee Restaurant offers a unique dining experience with a not-so-ordinary menu. The food is exceptional, with highlights including the fried chicken with garlic sauce, Shaker Burger, French dip, and top-notch Fried Okra. The restaurant is located in Shaker Village, a peaceful place off the beaten path, where visitors can enjoy the sounds of birds and the creek, and smell the fresh forest pine trees. The restaurant strongly recommends making a reservation due to its popularity with locals. They offer seating for breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the week, and a breakfast buffet on the weekends. Dinner was popular during a recent visit, so the only reservation available for a group was at 8:30 pm. Guests are seated right away, and the staff is kind and knowledgeable. When asked about specific ingredients, they double-check with the chef to ensure dietary needs are met. The menu features a variety of appetizers, salads, two soups (tomato celery and soup of the day), entrees, sides, and desserts. After ordering, diners are treated to complimentary country bread with butter and a dish of quick-pickled veggies, including okra, carrots, baby corn, radishes, and onions. The bread is not vegan, but the veggies are, and they are delicately flavored with a good crunch. The current seasonal menu has one vegan entrée — curried lentils with smashed sweet potato — which is truly lovely. The lentils are a bit salty, but the sweet potato balances the dish beautifully. Pricing is what one would expect for a farm-to-table restaurant within a tourist attraction — reasonable but not cheap (the lentil dish was $18). While more vegan options, including a vegan dessert, would be appreciated, the atmosphere is welcoming, the staff is lovely, and the food is definitely worth a visit. Overall, the venue offers stunning views of the lawn and a peaceful setting, making it ideal for special occasions like anniversaries. Parking can be busy, but the restaurant has provisions for easy parking, enhancing the overall experience.
