Delicious soul food. The chef/owner is the last surviving employee of the classic Freeman & Harris Café who's still in the eatery business. Unlike other places run by progeny of F&H chefs & employees, Chef Pinto didn't try to just duplicate the classic F&H stuffed shrimp recipe—he improved on it!
Man, talk about great seafood and friendly service, this was it. What a surprise to happen by this place and discover catfish fried to the perfect crispness, served hot and seasoned great. The fried shrimp was super fresh and tasty, not over battered but just enough to be crisp and protect wonderfully fleshy, clean tasting shrimp. Oh and the rice and gravy...the best gravy I've ever had from a restaurant! It's on my list to come back.
Well worth the trip. My husband had the fried liver. That was the 1st time I heard him say "wowzer". The portions are good and as someone else said, don't let the hole in the wall fool you. Ms. Mary is warm and welcoming and the food is delicious.
