We have been going to the Hart House for dinner since we moved to Ipswich in 2017. This review has been a long time coming!
The food at the Hart House is always fresh and delicious. The imaginative seasonal dishes that the chef’s come up with are always worth ordering. Last spring, we tried an asparagus tart with goat cheese and right now they have a peach panzanella salad.
The staff at the Hart House are nothing short of super people. We like to sit at the bar, where we receive attentive and thoughtful service. The waitstaff who come by the server station always smile and say hi and it really seems like everyone who works here enjoys where they are; which makes the dining experience very enjoyable.
Sometimes it takes a little while to get a seat, which makes sense for how popular this restaurant is. Even when waiting a few, you’re always offered a drink while you wait.
I can’t recommend this place highly enough! Special shout outs to Jackie, Maddie, Kiera, Todd, and Megan who are the only ones I know by name but with their whole crew make this a special place. Thanks everyone :)

As an Italian tourist, I've visited the area three times over the years to see my friends in Middleton. This restaurant is our top choice for a delightful dinner, offering incredible American cuisine in a relaxed yet special setting. It's truly one of my global favorites.
My wife and I had our wedding reception at 1640 and it was perfect. The owner, Kim, was a tremendous help and everything went swimmingly. Our head server, Libby, was a pro as well. The food, drinks, decor and service were all 10/10. I've been back for dinner multiple times since and I'm going again soon.
Great menu. Super GF friendly. Service and ambiance were top notch. The Chicken Milanese was incredible. Highly recommend!
They don’t make them like the 1640 Hart House anymore. You come here for the incredible food, but end up staying for the amazing service and ambience. This place is easily one of the best restaurants on the North Shore.
My spouse & I LOVE 1640 Hart House! Excellent food, generous portions, great service, authentic old-school atmosphere, & spectacular cocktails. Highly recommend!
This was a great place to go. Dishes are around $25 to $40 but they are big. Ordered the Hart House Chicken and it was two large breast pieces and so much pasta. Come hungry. Drinks were strong. I got the Autumn Mule and it was larger than I thought it would be and it was great. Soup was also good. I got the clam chowder (as one does visiting the area), but it was a little too watery for me but the lobster chowder was great and had great consistency.

1640 Hart House in Ipswich is one of my go-to spots. The staff is always friendly and helpful when it comes to the menu. Last time, I had the pan-seared salmon, and it was excellent—cooked just right. They take reservations ahead of time, and I’ve never had any issues getting a table. It’s a solid choice if you’re looking for a good meal in a nice, relaxed setting.

We hadn't been here for a while and probably won't be back anytime soon. The food was fair at best, there was plenty of it but it was flavorless.

I asked for the manager and when I explained the service and wait times She told us it like being in a doctors office. and there were complications with other customers.
they comp the dinner but charged us for a glass of wine.
I hate writing a bad review. but this one deserves it.

Unfortunately, no one sitting at our table could see the menus without a phone flashlight. We’re all in our early 40s, and we don’t all have bad eyesight.
The meal I ordered was the Parmesan crusted sole. The fish tasted very fishy and stale and was swimming in butter and grease. I was only able to eat a couple bites. I told the server at the end of the meal, and she said she wished I’d told her sooner, but she hadn’t come to check on us since putting the entrees on the table. I had no opportunity to tell her before she came back to take it away. I was charged full price, and she saw that I didn’t eat any of the meal.
So, I paid $70 for some iced tea, a shared appetizer, 3 bites of fish, and a few French fries.
My family has been in the fish business for generations. This fish was inedible. My friend said her shrimp was rotten, but she was too afraid to complain to this particular server and ended up taking it home instead of eating her meal.
I will not be returning to or recommending this restaurant.
