I wish they'd reopen the tasting room. I hate rum generally because I thought all rums were like Captain's, but Privateer corrected me.

I was finally able to stop by the distillery, and chose their Distillers Drawer release to do so. SImply an amazing American rum rivalling unadulterated Caribbean rums. For rums that have not aged 10+ years as of yet, could have fooled me. They sip just fine!! Andrew Cabot the founder poured for my tastings and I received some great rum history. It was also great to meet Maggie Campbell. This is a serious rum.

I thought I knew about rum, but this tour was an education, Got to taste some exquisite rums and went home with a bottle of Navy Yard. Great way to spend and hour and a bit.

Great experience and even better rum.

I have been interested in Privateer every since Lonny Newburn at The Boston Shaker suggested it. For those who don’t know the Boston Shaker in Somerville MA suffice it to say you cannot order a drink there but you will get an education(books and cocktail tools) and for that reason they are frequented by dedicated bartenders and seekers of knowledge and that brings me to Privateer. The founder Andrew Cabot is descended from Andrew Cabot, who preceded him by six generations, an actual privateer who was not surprisingly also a distiller and purveyor or rum. That early pivotal trade is part of our world’s checkered history, but right now we are concerned with craftsmanship and with rum. The tasting is generous and informative connecting individual pours with techniques and equipment which had been highlighted during the tour. Kevin, very knowledgeable and personable, led our tour through the production and aging facilities. You will likely enjoy the aroma of the area where the barrels hold and age the rums. Cooperage is another chapter to the story and if you are interested you will get all your answers from Kevin. The subsequent tasting also featured very short-run productions, no more than one barrel, which the staff produced out of passion and curiosity. Some of these they call “Distillers Drawer” offerings since historically very short-run premium runs were kept close and not offered to market. The sourcing, washing, fermentation and distillation processes are illustrated during the tour. Pot stills are shown and distinguished from column stills which sit nearby. The latter are gorgeous copper and bronze affairs, built to Privateer specification by a family in Germany. I have been told the tours sometimes included tasting of the various sugars as well as the rums they produce and that people often come to repeat the tour visits since there is so much taught. I would certainly return for another visit.

Great local distillery. If you are serious about rum, they make some of the best around. Not around the North Shore but around the world. The people here are both very friendly and exceptional at their craft. People on rum forums are jealous of us who can purchase it here in Mass. If you get a chance to go to a Distiller's Drawer event do not pass it up.

This distillery is off the beaten path and their approach to distilling is novel and creative. Lots of innovation involved in distilling "Boston" rum - and you get to taste it all. And the tasting room is gorgeous! A great end to a fun day on the North Shore!

I can't believe that I only just took a tour here, total hidden gem! My friend and I took his friend that was visiting from out of state and got a great tour and tasting. I had been in a ton of brewery tours, but this was my first distillery. Our guide did a great job of taking us through the history of rum in New England and how Privateer makes their various types from scratch. Be sure to sign up ahead of time. It is outstanding!

Stopped in on Saturday to try some rum and check out the place. They've truly pulled out all the stops. The tasting room is really nice with a large sail boat turned into the bar. The staff was just wonderful and did a great job taking us through the tasting. Plan ahead if you want to take a tour. You can book that on their web site. The rum we had was outstanding and we left with a bottle and a plan to take friends back for a tour in the near future. Highly recommend you check the place out.

An absolute treasure. Some of the best rums around, remarkable for being so young. The Navy Yard and the queens share are outstanding. Seek out their limited releases, typically hand picked barrels that really shined. Their head distiller Maggie is also delightful. Do yourself a favor and set up a tour!

The finest rum in the world. Tour guides are themselves experts on all things about the history of rum, the fabrication process and the current rum market. Blown away by how informative and how impressive this company and its employees are.
