Matsuba Izakaya was underwhelming, to say the least.
We (4) made a reservation for this place on a Friday night (7:30) after seeing the glowing reviews and we left very disappointed just because of the service. The food was actually good, but the service was atrocious.
First off, we never got our drinks, which were simple diet cokes and a Japanese soda. Second, two of the 5 dishes we ordered came out wrongly. Our server (young man with glasses) barely stopped by our table to make sure we were okay and we ended up having to call another server (long-haired lady) for what we needed.
We brought a cake to this establishment because it was my birthday and we were told it was okay, in fact they offered to put my cake in the fridge, but quickly after we finished our food and our dirty plates were taken away, we were dropped the bill on the table, nobody offered dessert, hot beverages or plates to cut the cake we have brought. Honestly this was incredibly rude, we felt we were getting rushed out and the restaurant was by no means busy.
When we received the check, the sodas that we never got were there, so we called the server (the lady that ended up serving us, not the inicial guy) and we told her we weren’t done there, that we would like to order a cup of tea and a couple of plates to eat the cake we brought.
As we were taking pictures of the cake and of us, this server asked if we wanted a picture of all of us and we said, sure why not. I was trying to hold the cake up for the picture and the server goes “hurry up”…ok that was honestly the cherry on top, I started laughing, lol. The service in this restaurant was atrocious. Nobody apologized to us for the wrong dishes we got (and for that, obviously our food got delayed), or for not giving us our drinks at all, nothing. It was extremely rude and we left so so disappointed. I would say, again, the food was good and I might try it again for a carry out/pickup order, I would NOT go eat inside this restaurant.

Delicious!
I ordered again from this shop, but today they even came with a cute flower attached to the salmon. It was a very nice touch.

Reasonably priced on some items. Service was great. But very slow and the food took a long time as well. Service fee of 18% is added for a bigger party so be sure to look closely before adding your tip. Otherwise, you'll be giving over 30% tip for a decent experience.
We got yakitori, yellowtail nigiri, and a special yellowtail roll with asparagus and sweet potato in it.
The yakitori was undercooked (slightly) and mostly flavorless.
The nigiri was unbalanced. The fish quality was okay, but there was no wasabi to taste, and I have a very low spicy tolerance!
The maki would have been good if not for the asparagus, and when we removed it, it drastically improved, but meh. The maki was very pretty, however.
The service was good! The waiter returned pretty quickly and refilled drinks.
I don’t think I’d return, but it beats most of the sushi in Davis!
Come here frequently for takeout and dine in. We’ve never been disappointed!!! The sushi is fresh, all of the hot food is so nicely prepared and tasty. Prices are very reasonable which is rare for quality Japanese food in our area!
the food here was awesome and the restaurant has a very nice atmosphere. i highly recommend the sake aburi! it is so delicious. i also got a giant shell for free from the dinner

Made a reservation here to try it for the first time. When we arrived there were no less than 10 people all piled up at the front. None of us were seated by the time we left 20 minutes after arriving.
Absolutely no one was working the front - I don't understand how a place could be so short staffed they can't handle seating customers, handling takeout orders, or even answering the phone.
No idea what the food was like - my time is too valuable to have a reservation blatantly ignored. Anyone else reading this might have better luck.

Food was AMAZING, staff were very nice, food came out very quick. Modest but cute decor. Highly recommend stir fried udon, baked salmon roll, and shumai!

The chicken teriyaki was an enormous portion-- like two chicken breasts-- but the teriyaki sauce was watery and sparsely applied. I liked the steamed broccoli and the rice was good.

Service was sufficient, polite & speedy. Atmosphere was intimate and a lil crowded. That said, the sushi was AMAZING!!!
I’ve eaten a lot of maki rolls here in Boston and thus far this has been that only the highest quality sushi, but the most aggressively priced!!
The chefs were also accommodating for substitutions, as well as some special requests (I have a shellfish allergy, so there are considerations that go with it) and again given how much I asked them I was still astonished at how quick that sushi rolls came out and just the overall quality of everything that were served to me.
Hands-down this is some of the best sushi in Boston! Can’t wait to come back with friends!!!!
