Was so grateful to the sweet hostesses who squeezed us in with our 2 y/o before the dinner rush on MDW weekend! We live in the area but had never visited and everything was truly exquisite - the portions, the presentation, the flavors, and the team. Easily the best tasting meal I’ve had this year. So looking forward to going back again!

I have gone to the Farmhouse a handful of times. The quality and portions of the food have gone down and the prices have gone up. I was disappointed at the dining experience and the quality of the food the last time that I ate here, and hadn't been back in over a year. I decided to return because my date wanted to try it. I ordered the halibut and my date had the Milanese chicken. We had the farmer's salad as an appetizer. The Pros: We both sat at the bar for dinner and enjoyed the experience. The bartender was really nice and made great drinks. The Bee Keeper and G Ginger tequilla coctail was really tasty. The Cons: The farmhouse salad arrived quickly after we ordered it and it was underwhelming. It seemed like the lettuce was stored at an incorrect temperature because the center of it had frozen lettuce leaves. It was missing components listed in the description, eg: There was no watermelon radish and the salad had about 5 sunflower seeds in it. We waited until after we ate our appetizer to order our food because we wanted to have another cocktail. We figured that by the time the food was cooked and ready, we would be done with our second cocktail. Unfortunately, the food came in less than five minutes after we placed the order with the bartender. The bartender apologized for it coming out so quickly. The bigger issue is that if food is coming out this quickly, it is premade and maybe microwaved or quickly reheated. My date's fried chicken wasnt crispy and tasted like it was reheated. My halibut was fine, it was luke warm but obviously it wasn't freshly made. I've had fast food that was cooked fresher than the premade meal here. Unfortunately, this wasn't the first time I had food from here that was premade. If you are looking for somewhere where there is a chef who prepares food fresh, go elsewhere. There are plenty of nicer restaurants in Newton. Also, there is an issue with cleanliness. A worker came over and wiped down the bar after the couple next to us left. He left the dirty rag and spray bottle on the counter. The rag used to wipe the counter down smelled disgusting. It is a health violation to use something so vile to wipe down a surface that people are eating on.

I had the short rib pappardelle and it was amazing. Great food and nice atmosphere.

I am a geriatric care nurse at Beth Israel and one of my patients was in a delusional state when she just began to mutter the name of this restaurant over and over again. Then, she finally asked for God to grant her one more trip to The Farmhouse. I never paid too much attention to the restaurants in this area because I don't live here but with this glowing endorsement, I decided to give it a try so I called up my boyfriend and that night we were sitting at a cozy table in a cute little room. The bar area is also pretty aesthetically pleasing. I could not be happier with the food. Our salads and main courses were delicious and I got to try some of his pasta and that was also wonderful. I am also a Tasseography expert and I noticed a lot of patterns in the salad that were indicating a positive change coming. I think my patient is going to get better! I can't wait to tell her tomorrow that her revelation was repayed by the Universe. Decent birdwatching at this spot. Very clean bathrooms. Parking wasn't a hassle but if you can't find street parking you can also go to the lot where the drugstore is - they have a rear entrance. My one (minor) complaint is that the tables are a bit close together and I could hear conversations from other tables. People were talking politics and that sets off the complex PTSD.

Although we have had several great visits here in the past, we recently had to cancel a reservation as we had a very ill family member and there was a pending snowstorm. We live over an hour away as this location is the halfway point for us family and friends who live North of the city. We were shocked to be charged $20.00 per person for cancelling our reservation without 24-hour notice. We called the restaurant to ask about this and we were told very matter of fact that this is their policy, and you get charged automatically. Each time we have been there they place is packed and am sure our table did not go unused. Emailed the restaurant about this and never even got a response!!!

Food was quite good (farmers salad and bolognese were great) and the host, waiters, and support staff were all attentive and kind. This could be a 5-star local favorite, but there are parts of the atmosphere that we think could use some improvement.

The lighting throughout 80% of the restaurant is a fantastic warm lighting from well-thought-out Edison bulb fixtures. However, if you are seated at any of the 4-5 tables at the back by the kitchen, not only are the tables a little bit too close together (I’m guessing just under 12” between tables), but you are also unfortunately enveloped by the bright white lights from the kitchen. Same goes for the very front of the restaurant. There is a very bright spotlight in the front of the building that affects about 3 of the tables against the front windows. We went at night, so perhaps this is not an issue for early reservations or lunch, but it was quite noticeable. Interestingly, the table next to us (we were sitting at the front) actually asked to be moved about 5 minutes after sitting down. It is worth noting that if you come to sit at the bar or with a party of 4, you may never encounter this issue because the atmosphere in the very center of the restaurant is excellent with all warm lighting at a long bar flanked by 4-seater tables.

Regardless of your party size, this next item might still affect you, and that is the music selection. We felt it was a bit loud and incongruous with the warm farm to table restaurant vibe you are greeted with. In fact, the song we walked into was “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction absolutely blasting out of the speakers. This could easily have been remedied by choosing a playlist with little to no top hits or generally softer, less interruptive music.

Overall, we enjoyed ourselves but there were a couple moments where we were on the verge of politely leaving and saving the money for another night. I strongly believe the atmosphere can make or break a night out. With relatively small and inexpensive (or free) improvements this place could truly be a local gem.

Second time with my family and we noticed a drop in quality for the food. My Milanese in particular had too much dressing on the salad and the fried chicken was hard and tasted like had been deep fried in old oil. Frankly I had better fried chicken at food tracks. Also the beet root salad was too salty. The rest of the food, calamari, the fish tacos and chicken were ok, but not worth the money. Service was great and the place is still cute.
