Pretty good sandwiches! And REALLY enjoyable service - if your kink is being ignored by college students and/or talked down to by bitter locals :) feels like a toxic work environment, the bad vibes are palpable.

When we visited, they were absolutely slammed, two people making sandwiches on a Wednesday afternoon, and they killed it. There were 9 people in front of us and we waited about 12 mins for sandwiches. We got an Italian and The Lumberjack. Lumberjack is a delightfully bizarre combo of spicy chicken fingies, tomato, bacon, cucumber, and honey mustard. The bacon seemed to be purchased cooked, and I wish the cucumbers were sliced thinner, but it was a fun and original sandwich. Kind, quick service, and super reasonable prices for giant sandwiches.

I ordered 3 sandwiches, one gluten free. The gluten free bread was put on the same cutting board touching one of the other sandwiches, no safety for allergies whatsoever. It also took 40 minutes to get our food, and when I got it I was very disappointed. The tuna had no flavor and the bread was stale. Lots of selections of drinks and chips and a cute atmosphere, but overall disappointing.

Used to eat here ALL the time when I was attending nearby Hampshire College in Amherst, because I was in a Massachusetts Teacher Education Licensure (MTEL) Program at Mount Holyoke, which I started during my third year at Hampshire; plus I took a Five-College Consortium course at Mount Holyoke during my fourth year at Hampshire that ended up being part of my Division III as symposium support.
After I'd graduated from Hampshire with my Bachelor's Degree and my MTEL Baccalaureate Credential, I moved into Northampton, but, then I got into the year-long Master's Level MTEL Program at Mount Holyoke as well to get my Master's in Teaching (M.A.T.), so I was in South Hadley 2-3 times a week, and I HAD to get my Tailgate Picnic fix in -- I was OBSESSED with their sandwiches! And their Coffee was good too. I'm a Jewish boy from NYC, so I KNOW good Deli.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I got an Italian sandwich.. which is the first time I ever got a sandwich from them and it was just totally put together wrong… the meat was just thrown on top of the sandwich not actually in it and put mostly baloney. The sandwich was prolly the worst sandwich I’ve ever had.. I do not suggest getting a sub from them because obviously they don’t care about what they’re doing. They don’t care about the customers!

I've traveled the World and lived in a bunch of places, and nothing compares to Tailgate. I hate to say it, but it's so true, and it keeps me coming back even though I haven't lived in SH for a decade.
The ambiance of the place is phenomenal. It's so adorable and warming, like your visiting your favorite family member. Handwritten menus and knick knacks scattered throughout the place to make you feel at home.
The food is magnificent. I almost always get The Lumberjack on wheat wrap, and ALWAYS get the pickle 🥒. Do yourself a favor and get a side of pasta salad, and then pick up some delicious chips as you slide down towards the register.
I'm 2 hours away as I write this, and I'm now changing my weekend plans..
I have been many times and it was always great. Today, while being short staffed, they made the most perfect sandwich I have ever had.
This place is not what it used to be only a few months ago. The new owners have almost an entirely new staff and the service is terrible. If you order in person you’ll have a long wait and they frequently forget items when you place a phone order. They aren’t very helpful when you mention the forgotten items and tell you to go back in line and order it again. What was once the best lunch spot in town is now simply just a problem. Avoid this place unless you have absolutely no other options
Went for the first time this weekend and unfortunately did not feel welcome..each staff member seemed like we were inconveniencing them by being there and ordering. I’ve worked in a kitchen for over ten years of my life and understand the stress and need for prep time but the woman working the sandwich area could not have seemed any more put off by having to take our order..food was just ok.
