Been here many times for fish and chips. Tonight was awful. Tasted like they just ground up fish and batter was so tough all four of us couldnât cut through it. Wonât be back. And we drove from Winnipeg for a treat. Very disappointed.

We haven't been to Sawney's in a long time so we thought it would be nice to go back. Well the menu has changed and it's pretty average, nothing to set itself apart from any other ordinary restaurant. My husband has the chicken pot pie. It came deconstructed ( ladled filling on the plate a puff pastry top sitting on it with a side of bland mash potatoes. A total lazy way of presenting and the taste was bland..
I had the fish and chips. Nothing spectacular either, I've had better elsewhere .
They have removed anything to do with the UK in the decor and very limited in its menu. Bland and non subscript is what Sawney Beans has become.

Went here for the first Food was amazing! I had the bacon cheeseburger with fries. The wait was like 15 minutes but to be expected when the food is freshly cooked
Only thing wrong is they're not rushing to get food to you
Do yourself a favor: donât waste your time, money, or appetite at Sawney Beans. This place is an absolute joke pretending to be an Irish restaurant. If I didnât have to leave a star to post this review, they wouldnât have gotten that. Frankly, Iâm shocked this place is still in business.
From the moment we walked in, it was clear weâd made a mistake. The vibe was just off. The floors were sticky, the air smelled like stale beer mixed with neglect, and the bar area looked like someoneâs garage after a failed yard sale. Clutter everywhere, like nobodyâs bothered to clean or organize in daysâmaybe weeks. Tables didnât seem wiped down, and everything just felt grimy. Hygiene? Nonexistent. And that theme carried right into the kitchen, where cooks worked without hair nets or beard covers. Add in servers eating while delivering plates to tables and youâve got a full-on health code nightmare. Disgusting doesnât even begin to cover it.
The service was no betterâcompletely checked out. Our server acted like she couldnât be bothered to do her job. No greeting, no smile, no basic human decency. She made it pretty clear we were an inconvenience by even showing up. Not a single recommendation, no upselling (honestly, a mercy in disguise), and she checked on us exactly once before vanishing. When she messed up our drink order, she dropped a replacement glass on the table like we were lucky to get anything at allâno asking if we wanted a refill, no apology. Zero professionalism, zero effort. And when we left without tippingâbecause they earned nothingâshe had the nerve to mumble under her breath as we walked out the door. Classy, right?
And then thereâs the food. Calling it âfoodâ might be a stretch. I ordered the Bangers and Mash, expecting at least a halfway decent pub classic. What I got was a leathery, overcooked sausage paired with mashed potatoes that were clearly powdered from a box. Bland, pasty, and completely devoid of any real flavor. The âred wine and onion gravyâ was basically just a pile of greasy onions drowning the plate in a thin, tasteless mess that made everything soggy and even less appealingâif that was possible.
I also made the mistake of ordering calamari. Overcooked into rubber bands, and so salty I felt my blood pressure rise with every bite. My partner chose the chicken Alfredo, which was somehow worse. The noodles were overcooked into mush, the sauce was bland and watery, and the chicken? Iâm not even sure it was chicken. It had the bizarre, spongy texture of a cheap meat substituteâlike something youâd expect to find in a budget frozen meal, not at a sit-down restaurant. It was a sad, flavorless mess.
By the time we were done, I was actually angry weâd wasted an evening and hard-earned money there. There was nothing redeeming about this place. Dirty, lazy, uninspiredâSawney Beans isnât just bad, itâs an embarrassment. Poor hygiene, pathetic service, and food that shouldnât be served to paying customers. Honestly, Iâve had better experiences at gas station hot dog rollers.
Bottom line? Avoid this place like the plague. Spend your money anywhere else. Trust me, youâll thank yourself later.
I will not got back, the service was abysmal and she didn't upsale anything. Didn't greet us with her name or offered any specials. Made no effort to make me feel like a valued person. Food was over cooked and flavorless. I should have asked for a refund. Not going back.
First time being here, friend recommended it.
Was really busy, which is a good thing, not too much time waiting for a table for my friend and I.
I enjoyed the pub atmosphere, our waitress, in general was friendly, but, not overly helpful.
We both ordered fish and chips, and having had some good fish and chips recently, that was the bar I was measuring against, these fell well below my expectations; and after dinner my friend said the food experience was not what he was use to for that establishment.
Perhaps it was a one off, would be opening to trying to again to see, but overall, a meh experience.
